Found the culprit

Thanks to some help by Larry Buskirk. We have found the reasoning behind all the shaking going on with my lathe.

A part of the tailstock that the hand wheel attaches to is most definitely bent. This piece also attaches to the sleeve which holds our live  tail center. Problem is 2 things, 1 the part is not listed in the PSI parts list for that lathe, and 2 it is pressed into the tailstock or threaded in such a way that it cannot be removed, at least not with the tools I have. So since i cannot see this inner part other than an end view as it is fixed to the tailstock and since PSI doesnt list this part in their parts list, I will have to contact the tech at PSI to try to get the problem resolved which of course means money, money that i don't have right now. So this will have to be continued later.

Charles, I'd call and explain the situation.  They may not cover all the cost but you may be surprised.

Wow!  No wonder you have been having problems.  Once you get this fixed, the lathe should be as good as new.  Good luck.

It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
