Friday again, What are you working on in your Shop?

Featured Replies

For me it was good to be back in the shop this week. Filled an order for a cutting board and seam ripper. Also working on the kitchen island project. Hope to get the doors done for the island this weekend.

I'll be working on that this weekend and still changing out some windows.

Had the first frost here this morning, so we are getting the cooler weather down here.

So how about you all, what are you working on this weekend.

Starting a small cabinet that is by Garrett Hack.

List of things new to me on this build

Haunched tennons

halfblind dovetails

dentil moulding

coved cornice

rasied panel door.

3 piece solid back panel with beading. I'll be making a hand beader for this.

sliding dovetails.

Last thing is that some of the parts are 1/8" and 1/4" thick and thats thinner than I normally work with.

But today will be spent getting ready for my new job  that starts on Monday.  Woo Hoo

Nothing.  I have a craft show this weekend. I will demo cutting 3D bird houses on my scroll saw there but that is as close to the shop as I will get. but for the next 2 weeks I will be in it everyday for several hours preparing for a double show the first week in Nov.  2 separate 2 days shows the same weekend. splitting inventory up so need to make a lot more still.

Got that treadmill tore apart yesterday. I'll be reassembling it this weekend....minus all the stuff not needed for a sander. Found some 105X14 belts online. When it's all ready to run, I'll order them.

The way it's built, I'll have to cut the belts and re glue them because I can't slip them on the platens (right term?),

There'll not be a lot of pressure on the joint, so it should work. (crossed fingers)

I'll be finishing the drawer fronts on my router table cabinet. After I got off work this morning I was able to put the second coat of oil / urethane finish on and hope to get the last coat on this evening before work tonight. Tonight will be my Friday and then off for 4 days of which most of it will be used for laying out walls for my shed.

I'll be purchasing materials for a new cabinet job I landed! I probably won't have any progress pics till next weekend though. I promised the kids that we'd get some foam and make some spooky head stones for Halloween for our front yard. It'll be fun!

Looking forward to the story Ron, where can we read it. Blog? I hope to seem some pics man! As a matter of fact, you could also create an album here on TPW and store your progress pics in the album.

I wrapped up (literally and put them in a storage tub for Christmas sales) 20 cutting boards in 2 different styles and 3 different patterns. I made 9 of the 3D boards out of maple, walnut, cherry and padauk. I also made 11 end grain boards out of maple, walnut and cherry. The  3D boards are about 13"x9" and the end grain boards are about 11"x11" square. In my neck of the woods the smaller boards do much better than larger ones. I also had to do some work on my wife's favorite little square cutting board that has been used and abused for some time and I kept forgetting to refinish it. Just the like the Cobbler's kids going around barefoot while all the others have new shoes, the woodworker's wife has a beat up cutting board while he makes new ones to sell. Oh well, she has it back on the kitchen counter and ready to go after being sanded down and getting a couple of fresh coats of mineral oil.

Now that those are all done, I am getting ready to make up some new templates and then make some more of my kid's knock down rocking chairs for Christmas sales.

Your cutting boards look fantastic!  Rocking chairs are very cute and obviously very sturdy.  Nice job on everything!  You sand the end grain boards on a drum sander?  I understand you can't put them through the planer.

I have a lot of prep work to do tonight, so I can start turning tomorrow.  Have a 13 1/4 inch diameter dark maple bowl to glue up,  and need to cut out some platters/plates so I can turn these items this weekend.  Also, hoping to get additional bowls scrolled and glued up for future turning.  It's Friday night - and the weekend has begun!

It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.

I have a Jet 16-32 drum sander that all the cutting boards go through and then finish them off with the Random Orbit Sander.

So how well did you all do on your weekend projects.

My projects are sometimes like my appetite when I sit down to eat. I put more on the plate than I can eat.

I worked on the wooden range hood this weekend and after a couple of design changes I hope to finish it and get a dry fit under the cabinets this afternoon.

On Friday I spent some time starting to make up a bunch of templates for my kids knock down rocking chairs. I talked with John Morris about selling some of these for a specific cause so I will be posting more about that today or tomorrow once I get through all the dark brown hardboard dust. On Saturday my wife and I spent the day together and went out and did some shopping picking up a few things for the house. Saturday night we we out to dinner with some friends from church at a local Mexican restaurant where one of our favorite Christian artists plays every month or so. His name is  Darrell Mansfield and he plays blues. He is also a serious harmonica player and is in the Blues Hall of Fame and the Hohner Hall of Fame. So we had some great food and fellowship while listening to Darrell and his band from 7-10pm. Sunday was church, NASCAR, football and baseball. So it was a very nice relaxing weekend, but now it is back to the sawdust.
