October 30, 201114 yr Critiques? Are you kidding? Beautiful pen Jason, very nice figure and finish. And it looks very comfortable to use. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
October 30, 201114 yr Author Thanks, John. I guess this site isn't set up for the images to show when hot-linked from another site?   Semper fiwww.swearingen-turnings.comhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v166/smpr_fi_mac/woodturning/Pens/White Tail Deer Antler Pen/DPP_0336Small-1.jpg
October 30, 201114 yr Yes Jason it is set up that way too. I just did it to your original post, when you go to add a photo to your discussion, simply choose "From a URL" at the top of the add photo dialogue. It brings any photo in via url. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
October 30, 201114 yr Author Ah. Got it. I'm used to just copying the info from Photobucket's page. Thanks! Semper fiwww.swearingen-turnings.com
October 30, 201114 yr Very nice Jason. Great fit & finish. Where did you get this kit. The Jr Gents I've turned dont have the same cap top or clip that yours has. Is this a new kit?
October 31, 201114 yr Jason,Very nice pen, you do nice work. I've never tried turning a pen, so when I get the lathe redone I might give it a try.As to loading pictures here, I upload them direct from my camera via the USB cable. This is the easiest website to upload pictures to that I have seen. Larry
October 31, 201114 yr Very nice pen. I love the wood grain. Have not heard of this wood before. where might I get a piece of it?
October 31, 201114 yr Author Mike--Sorry, it's not a Jr. Gent. It the Artisan Jr. Retro in 10k gold from CUSA, part number 050-4621. Arlin--This one isn't for sale; it's for a pen trade between some members at IAP. The guy I got to make the pen for is one of the original Marine Raiders from WWII. I'm hoping he likes it! Keith--This piece was given to me; I didn't buy it. Google "curly pyinma" -- here's the first hit:http://www.westpennhardwoods.com/shop/catalog/Pyinma.html  Semper fiwww.swearingen-turnings.com
October 31, 201114 yr Jason, You have pen making down to a fine science.  It's gorgeous, as usual.   SQ It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
October 31, 201114 yr Author Thanks, Susie, but I wouldn't go that far just yet.  You guys don't see my failures...which is still at an unacceptable rate! Semper fiwww.swearingen-turnings.com
October 31, 201114 yr Author Larry-- Â If you make the mistake of getting sucked into pen making (which probably will happen, as you allowed yourself to get sucked into turning ), head over to www.penturners.org -- it's a site dedicated to *ALL* aspects of pen turning. Â It's amazing what people will "turn" into a pen. Â I'm amazed weekly (used to be daily) at all the great art that goes on there. Â Those jerks are about to get me hooked into casting my own pen blanks. Â There's no limit to the addiction...Larry Buskirk said: Jason, Very nice pen, you do nice work. October 31, 201114 yr Jason that is an awesome looking pen. I really love the grain and the way it is highlighted. Very nice kit also. A very classy pen. I am sure the person you made it for will be excited. A very nice CA finish on there also. John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
October 31, 201114 yr Jason   I'm past the point of return myself! I should have all my casting equipment set up by the end of the week and hope to start casting next Monday. I'll probably start with a stainless steel braided PR cast for the Jr Gents II pen kit. Here is a picture I found on IAP:The first one if successful will be for a co-worker. We use a lot of SS Braided lines on aircraft so this will be a hot seller I hope.Jason Swearingen said: Larry--  If you make the mistake of getting sucked into pen making (which probably will happen, as you allowed yourself to get sucked into turning ), head over to www.penturners.org -- it's a site dedicated to *ALL* aspects of pen turning.  It's amazing what people will "turn" into a pen.  I'm amazed weekly (used to be daily) at all the great art that goes on there.  Those jerks are about to get me hooked into casting my own pen blanks.  There's no limit to the addiction...Larry Buskirk said:  Semper fiwww.swearingen-turnings.com
October 31, 201114 yr Author Oh, I like that!  I'm surprised that the braid is thin enough to work like that.  Another reason I want to start casting is so I can make bottle stopper and shaving razor/brush blanks. I also want to make pens from things that aren't readily available as blanks--pine cones, sweet gum seed pods, etc. Semper fiwww.swearingen-turnings.com
October 31, 201114 yr Jason The braid is fairly thin but I'll let you know how it turns out.Jason Swearingen said:Oh, I like that!
October 31, 201114 yr Author Here are two more pens I turned yesterday evening and today. The redwood was made to order; the cholla is for sale.  Artisan Jr. Retro in cholla cactus and resin fill. Red palm inlay. Pen blank was *not* painted because I wanted the clear resin to show the glue under, giving it a "crystal" effect.    Redwood burl on a cigar kit in black titanium.    Semper fiwww.swearingen-turnings.com
October 31, 201114 yr Those are some great looking Pens. Very high class. Excellent craftsmanship.  John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
