Blanket Chest start-up

Featured Replies

Spent a few hours over the last two days, milling some more of those old rafters down to size.    I'm going to try to make a Blanket Chest, ala New Yankee Workshop.    A frame and panel affair, with a flat lid.   To start, I needed a bunch of boards resawn down.  Them old rafters were 2" thick (8/4) by 4-3/4 wide.   To get rid of most of the "bad' spots, I ripped some stock off of each edge.   Now I have things down to 3- 4" wide, with square edges.   Next, I set the rip blade to just over half way, and the fence at just a smidge over 3/4'.     Rip right down the middle, flip board and keep the same face against the fence, and complete the rip cut, nails and all.    Since one side will be a might thicker, I just repeat to get things even.    Usually all the nail are in the waste area.  A few pictures of where I am at:ning-woodwork055-38646-31.jpg?width=750Nasty looking, ain't it?    They do clean up nice, thoughning-woodwork058-38646-67.jpg?width=750Most of the pieces for the frames , that dark stain IS the wood.   The light wood WAS the inside of the rafter.   The one that looks like an "L" is one of the corner "posts'.   M&T  joinery.   I  also glued up all 6 panels while I was out there.    The two smaller ones for the ends were done first.    Since they had set for over 24 hours, I started to mill them a bit:ning-woodwork057-38646-86.jpg?width=750  Between a beltsander, and a small handplane , two panels went FLAT.  The plane was a Defience #4.  There was also some longer frame pieces to mill up:ning-woodwork060-38646-31.jpg?width=750Don't know WHAT that red thing is for.....     Now, IF I can just keep that nice colour showing on the OUTSIDE of the chest.   One more picture, then I'll go...ning-woodwork061-38646-55.jpg?width=750ah yes, the "stash".    Those "legs" are too thick, and full of nails.   These are my "leftovers.    Maybe another project in there somewhere.Grin.gif

I had to cut short the work shop tonight.    Until those panels have cured enough to mill them, I will just have to wait.    Wasn't that good a night anyway,  even the camera was fighting me.     I also had to process another old rafter ( number 5) just to have enough stock for the lid.      One piece that WAS going in the lid, had a crack in it.      Picked it up tonight, and it just fell apart.   Cut the "bad" part off (firewood box supplies) and went outside to get another rafter.     That old boy yielded four decent pieces, about 40" long.   So, now I have 7 such lid pieces, plus a couple of shorter pieces for the bread board edges that Ralph likes.   Oh well, maybe later this week I'll have better luck out there.   Thursday, and Friday are "off" days.   So far, about 8 hours spent on this little project, mainly resawing stuff to size.      Some milling, and some re-milling,  and a little bandsaw work.   Once those panels are done, I can start to assemble this thing.

PS:   the "bottom" will be a few pine slats,  resawn for a joist or two.    I'll need to add a center strecher to support the middle,  again I'm going my way instaed of Norm's.    Norm used a piece of 3/4 plywood in his.

I did have the two smaller panels milled a bit, just need to set up the bevel cut for the "Shaker style'.    I also had a test fit for the ends.    No pictures of that,as the camera had "died".    It was one of those nights,   two of the other panels came out of the clamps on time, only to come apart at a couple joints.   Back in the clamps they went, which more or less shut things down.  Need to get a test fit of the front and back, to size the two (each) panels that are needed there.    I did spent about a (whole) $1.00 on some screws.     Next $$$ will be some hinges.

Now, as to a "finish"..........105.gif106.gif114.gif
