November 1, 201114 yr Wow!  Great information.  Thanks for posting. SQ It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
November 2, 201114 yr Arlin-- There's no need to worry about the safety of the glue holding true.  I wouldn't do this on green wood (most of my "big" turning is green), but on cured wood, it'll be fine.  I personally don't like using glue, but that's only because I don't like to spend the time waiting for it to dry and then worry about cutting it off after.  I almost ALWAYS use the worm screw on my chuck for mounting my blanks because it's easy, quick, and proven. Semper fiwww.swearingen-turnings.com
November 2, 201114 yr Depending on the bowl and size, I turn mine between centers until I cut the tenon. Here is a link to how Stewart Batty does it. http://www.turnedtreasures.com/project.html/bowl_turning/bowl_turning_pg1.html  John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
November 2, 201114 yr It appears she doesn't use kraft paper between the layers.  I'm not keen on having to cut them apart, either. OK, let me open a can of worms.  How should a waste block be glued on?  Anyone care to share.   Can kraft paper be purchased in the roll?  If so, where would I purchase it.   SQ It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
November 2, 201114 yr When I used glued on waste blocks, I put paper between them.  This was back in the day when you still got paper bags from grocery stores, so it's what I used.  Yes, kraft paper can be purchased in rolls, but it's pretty pricey, and you'll probably never use the whole roll even if you turn every day for ten years.  They're huge. If you have a chuck, I'd learn to use it.  If not, I'd recommend saving up and buying one; they open up so many possibilities. Semper fiwww.swearingen-turnings.com
November 2, 201114 yr You should be able to purchase the brown paper in a roll at Sam's or most any of the craft stores. John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
November 2, 201114 yr I agree, paper bags are getting harder and harder to find.  Good idea about checking at the craft stores. I will do that. I picked up some lunch bags at the grocery store, but wasn't sure the paper was thick enough so haven't used these bags yet.   Ok, everyone when you do make a waste block and kraft paper insert, what glue do you use when you attach them? SQ  It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.

November 2, 201114 yr Back when I turned my very first three bowls in 8th grade shop, we didn't have any chucks of any type. We used notebook paper with water and flour glue. My two larger bowls are both 10" dia. Still a wee bit of the paper showing on one bowl.I surely would not use that stuff today.I will stick to chucks or screws, which I think are safer than glues, especially CA. . Most of the times, glues will probably be safe, but a good/bad catch can change the whole game. Like already mentioned, I use between centers on any thing of size.Leo in AZ.
November 2, 201114 yr Birds were intended to fly.  Bowls, platters, and plates were not.   SQ Arlin Eastman said: Hay everyone On the glue part, I was talking about large unbalanced pieces of wood. They have been knowen to break and fly off of the lathe. Now rounded bowl blanks can be glued up without problem, it is just the again the logs that are not round I would not glue up.
