WOOD WORKING QUIZ for 03 NOV 11 "a learning tool"

Good Morning Friends,

You have planed the wood and sanded to a perfection and are about ready to stain the wood for your project only to drop something on the surface and put a ding into the surface.

Has the ding caused the piece to be ruined or is there a way to get rid of the ding?

put a wet cloth over the ding and then apply heat from you wife's electric iron- just don't let her catch you. The steam will cause the compressed wood fibers to swell and lift the dent.

What a great idea!  I'm going to have to use that.  Moving iron into the shop.  lol

That will work.

I'm with Lewis on this one, only I have my own iron Grin.gif as cheap as they are nowdays. Occasionally I will use it to transfer a pattern to wood, you just have to have a reverse copy and watch the heat.

yeap that will sure work. Been there done it.

Because water has such a high surface tension, I like to fill the dent with warm water until it covers the dent completely.  Then check it when the water dries.

Don't hafta worry about SWMBO catching you using her iron!

That's a clever idea. I am going to have to try this.

Good Morning All,

You have the tiger by the tail on this one for that is exactly the method to use. I deliberately showed how to do it yesterday by pouring some water on the wood and covered it with a rag and used my heart gun to raise the indentation.

Thank you all for your support.
