November 5, 201114 yr  I got a bit more done on this little box today:From Norm Abram's book.   And now a look at how I made mine:all glued up, and waiting for the sanders.   Panels were raised using the tablesaw.  Angle part was 12 degrees. This corner will be at the back.   I have some "Witch's Brew" stain, and a thin swipe will match the "dark" stained wood.  Another look:as for the "bottom", didn't have enough pine joist on hand, but I did have so old 1/2" plywood:screwed to cleats.  The cleats are just some 4/4 by 4/4 scrap.  Hey, I said the plywood was old.Panel being glued up for the top, with a piece for the bread board edge sitting along side. The light colour is from the inside of these old boards.   As for the scrap pile..Just too small to keep, but this is about all the scrap, so far...  'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
November 5, 201114 yr Author  Too small for anything I make, will be kindling I think.    'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
November 5, 201114 yr Author  Don't know how much it costs to send a "care package", depends on the box size.    There is some white oak, some cherry, some ash, some Aromatic Red Cedar, and a few pieces of pine.  Take your pick...  'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
November 5, 201114 yr Author all the wood for this, came from about 6 old rafters.   Boards were de-nailed,  cut into two lengths about 40-45" each, planed a bit to clean them up, and resawn down to about 3/4" thick. I said 3/4", but I also allowed some extra wood for the planer to smooth out.  Rafters were about 4-3/4" wide, and 2" (most of them) thick.  One rafter would have about a half pound of 7-8 penny nails in it.  Outside of the rafter was a nasty black colour.  Planned down to a dark brown. Although I'd getmost of those nails out, some still showed up.    I went out and got a CHEAP 28 tooth rip blade(SKIL) to do all the dirty work.    I also "caught" a few nails as they came up through the kerf, one even bounced off my safety glasses! A look a what I started with:Ugly as all get out?how about a whole stack of uglies? One more view, if you dare...that one in the middle is a 4/4 by 14" by 10'.  I'll rip out the worst of that mess, and plane down until it is "pretty".   And, to think, there is at least another FULL pickup truck load yet to show up at the shop.   'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
November 5, 201114 yr Great job again Steve, our reclaimed lumber specialist! Steve, we are going to have start a reclaimed lumber area on our site if you keep this up!So, finish? Clear, stained? I kind of like the idea of clear myself, to show off the character in this piece with history. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
November 5, 201114 yr Author  Will have to stain some of it, to blend things together.     Just been informed that this is for the Daughter's Xmas present. I have about 11 hours in this project, mainly re-doing that old wood.   'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
