TOOLS THAT RUNS OF 110 AND OR 220 VOLTS

Featured Replies

Am considering buying 14" band saw. The one I'm looking at is 110/ 220 volt but from reading the tool spec it  wired for 220 volt.  Now my wife thinks I'm good handyman to have around, electrical I'm not.  I can change out light switched and light fixtures, but they are all 110 volts.  How do you change the tool from 220 to 110 volt?  Is it complicated?  Or would there be some instructions that comes with the tool pn changing the tool voltage?   I will later get an 220 plug outlet put in the garage/shop, but that maybe after the first of the year.   106.gif

Usually, if a machine can be wired for dual voltages, there are illustrations in the owners manual. You need to also be aware that some machines have magnetic starters. Some of these starters will only work on 110 OR 220v. Even though the motor may be easily re-wired from one voltage to another, the starter may need to be replaced.

Guess I'll have check with the source to find out about the starter.

Double what Lew said. If it can be wired for both, there will be instructions on how to do so. My Grizz TS is wired at 220 but had the 110 option as well, I had my pops do it since he's more handy with power then I.

Generaly small factional motors 1 hp or lower do not have a magnetic motor switch and so the problems with the control voltage and overloads are not a concern. That being said a pic of what you have is best to determine  that. Most of the time the instrution on how to wire from 110 to 220 is inside the motors junction box. it is a mater of conection the colored wires as pre diagram . if you post a pic i will help you do it. Its so easy a monkey could do it.
