November 20, 201114 yr I'll give ya all a hint, I was trying to route a 3/8th's rabbet for the cabinet sides to join. What caused this bad fit? This is why I always do a test cut on scrap of the same material I am using. Â John Morris The Patriot Woodworker
November 20, 201114 yr Looks like Murphy almost got you. Measure 2 or 3 time, test cut and adjust from there. Â Harry BrinkBulldog WoodworkingMontana
November 20, 201114 yr Author Sorry guys, I had to edit the post, the operation was done to join two 3/4" pieces of ply. Not a test fit for the back panel, sorry. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
November 20, 201114 yr If you are like me you blame it on dyslexia. I am always reversing numbers and reading the wrong "side" of the ruler. 5/8" becomes 3/8"- 1 1/16 is 15/16.
November 21, 201114 yr I'm willing to bet we have all done this. I know for a fact I have. Murphy is always around us just waiting. If I ever meet him in person, he is one dead $%#@#$%$#Â Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
November 21, 201114 yr Author OK guys, here it goes. I was in high gear, and I grabbed the wrong rabbeting bit. My bits are in my router table cabinet drawers, and I have written the size of the bit next to each hole the bit is inserted in. Well turns out the 1/2" rabbeting bit was in the 3/8th's hole in the drawer. So I grabbed the wrong bit! I set the depth to 3/8th's and that don't work out too well with a 1/2" rabbeting bit when your trying to join two board that are 3/4" thick. Well, as I said, the perfect reason for test cuts! Here we go!!! Much better fit!!!!! The proper 3/8th's rabbeting bit was used for this cut. Thanks for participating! Â John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
November 21, 201114 yr don't you just hate it when those bits move around in the drawer when you aren't looking. Â But an excellent example of the test cut first. Â John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
November 22, 201114 yr Hey John,If you were the only one to make that mistake you would be the only one however to be honest we all have been there and done that. What makes me mad at myself when I rabbet 3/8 wide by 3/8 deep when I wanted 1/4 rabbet 3/8" down.To error is human and if a fellow says he never makes a mistake, he ain't doing anything. Ralph
November 22, 201114 yr Author I don't know what happened John, the dang bit just jumped out of its 3/8ths hole and into the half inch! Yep Ralph, but fortunately it was a test scrap, thank goodness! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
