December 4, 201114 yr Here is the completed product - less the finish which the recipients are going to do themselves. Recipients made the box - I made the lid and lid attachments.  Box is an open design so the bottle of wine will show through. Box is 14 1/2 inches high x  4 13/16th inches wide. Lid is made out of walnut with a cherry lid liner.  Names & grapes are walnut..  Leaves and date are maple.  It's not real obvious in this picture, but each grape was cut out separately and glued back together for more definition.  Also, the leaves are not as thick as the grapes in  hopes of adding more dimension. Once everything is dry, will do a light final sanding on the lid.  This gets delivered tomorrow. SQ Happiness is wood chips flying!
December 4, 201114 yr My gosh Sue, that is absolutely gorgeous. Very sleek and fine lined. I love the contrasting woods and the overall design. What goes in the lower level? What goes in the top level?John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
December 4, 201114 yr Author John, Thanks for the kind words. Â Good question. Â The grapes and lid are 11/16 inches thick. Â Everything else is shorter at 1/4 inch. December 4, 201114 yr What I see is two levels though Sue, is there an upper compartment and a lower compartment?SQ said: John, Thanks for the kind words. Â Good question. December 4, 201114 yr Author John, There is a 1/4 inch lid liner under the lid which holds the lid securely to the box. Â If that doesn't answer your question, I have no clue what you are talking about. December 4, 201114 yr That's right fine, SQ. Methinks John is referring to the box. Your exquisite lid sets atop what looks like a compartment. Then, there's an open compartment below. I'm guessing the upper section is open to the bottom section for a large bottle, maybe?Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' December 4, 201114 yr Author Gene, Thanks for the kind words and thank you for explaining the question.  You are correct, the body of the box is just an open area with 4 walls and a bottom and no other compartments. The entire area inside the body of the box is for a wine bottle. That slat appears to be another compartment, but it is not.  That slat is just part of the walls of the box.  Actually, another compartment could be very handy to hold for example the cork screw.  Not a bad idea. SQ Gene Howe said: That's right fine, SQ. Methinks John is referring to the box. January 6, 201214 yr Now that is neat. The wood combo great and the detail is top notch. I wish my hands were that steady.
January 6, 201214 yr Author Thanks.  That is a project that I almost didn't make because I didn't know how to make a box with mitered corners.  The customer ended up making the box and I ended up doing the lid only.  Since then I made a hexagon box so feel much more comfortable making boxes now.  It was a fun project.  I just heard from the customer that ordered it, and the lady that received the box as a xmas gift was crying on the phone she was so happy with it.  It's always a great feeling when it's so well received. SQD. January 6, 201214 yr Man, I don't know what happened, but I missed this post completely. That is so cool. The lid is awesome. Now cutting out each grape one at a time, that is too neat. I love the contrast of the woods. You did real good on that one SQ. Thanks for sharing it and I am sorry I missed it when it was originally posted.John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com

January 7, 201214 yr Author Mike,Thanks. Â My goal as always been to create something generic that many would want. Â But it seems personalized is always the most requested. Â SQMike Dillen said:That's an awesome box. Great wok and great combination of woods.
