My Planer stopped and wouldn't start back up

Featured Replies

This weekend I was working feverishly to get some orders filled and ready to ship. I was starting to plan a cutting board to get it ready to cut and make the end grain glue up. I looked at the gauge on the planer from the wrong angle or in the wrong part of the bi-focals and set it a bit too deep. Started the board in and it went about six inches and the planer shut down.

I check the breaker, the plug and everything had power. I had power to the stop button on the planer. Figured it had to be a reset so I took the panels off the bottom and looked everywhere and couldn't find a reset button anywhere.

Called Grizzly and their tech support doesn't work on weekends. No I am not feeling too good so I jump on the Internet and google the problem. Found a post where another person had the same problem and the start up capacitor had blown and had to get another one. So I am thinking if I have to order a part this is really going to put me behind.

I called Grizzly this morning and was told to remove the cover from the Thermal Over load and the button was inside that cover. I had been all through the manual and looked on their web site for that information and it wasn't listed anywhere.Since it was a new machine and still under warranty, I didn't want to start taking things apart until I talked with them.

I guess I only lost part of a day so if all is good tonight, I will get back on track. I posted this in hopes that if someone else had this problem and searched they would know to take the cover off the thermal protection box and find the rest inside the box.

Glad to hear you got her back up and running. This is something that should be posted on their website and should also be in the instruction manual.

I have been there and done that before. THe first thought is "OH NOOOOO! I broke my new $$$ machine!!!" Then the great relief when you find out that it isn't broken is really sweet.

Glad you got things back up and running again. Now go sit down and let your blood pressure even out.Grin.gif

I'd been meaning to ask you how the new planer was working and how you like it.  That's a piece that I'd like to get sometime.  Right now I've got a 12" Delta and I'm not wild about it, but it's what I've got for now.

Thank goodness for happy endings. But your right, the manual should have addressed this John. I have had a few Grizzly machines and one short coming I noticed was the manuals. They have gotten better though.

Roy I really do like the machine. It is an awesome planer. I took the advice of Bob Klose and got the spiral cutter head and it cuts so smooth, it almost feels like it doesn't need sanding. I have run some purple heart, birds eye maple and some figured cherry through it and it some out just as smooth.

The problem this past weekend was the first issue I have had and I caused it by taking too much material off. I wasn't trying to, just miss read the ruler on the side.

I really think they should have had a diagram showing where the reset was. Even when I got home last night and took the cover off the thermal protector, it wasn't evident by just looking what to press on. I did finally find a little blue connector that was sticking up and pushed it. I felt the click and put it back together and plugged it up and it came right on.

As I said it cuts really good, has two speeds and I get no snipe on either end of the board. I have the little Delta 12" also and it has served me well. I may hang on to it just for emergency use. The boards I was doing were wider though than I could run through the Delta. The Grizzly is 15" and I was making some wider boards for a special order.

You're right John. I think they are probably getting better, but a diagram on that since it was not clearly marked would have been really nice. I think there is a wiring diagram but that doesn't tell me where the reset is.

Anyway, all is good, I got it reset last night and by boards all glued up so tonight I will be getting them sanded so they can ship on Thursday.

Ah man I don't want to hear that you had problems with that Grizzly especially after I got mine table saw. Am glad you got the planer running again.  The owner manual could use some more clarification on some things even with mine.  Hopefully I'll get the wiring done after Christmas and start having fun.

Wayne I will say the folks at customer service were very good. Also the problem I had was my fault not the machines. I took too big a bite on a board and bogged it down. I am still very happy with it so down get too worried.

I know you are excited to get it running. Let us know how it goes.
