December 18, 201114 yr Hi everyone Been a while since I've had anything to post but thought you all might like to see one of the things I've been working on. This is my newest commissioned project . The client sent some sketches of what he wanted along with the dimensions of all of the knives and an idea of the kinds of woods to use. This monster is 14†wide x 13 †deep and 12†tall and weighs 31 lbs. Made from Bloodwood, Cherry, Maple, Ebony, Jatoba and Walnut and finished with 5 coats of wipe-on satin poly. All of the slots for the knives were done with a scrollsaw using a #5 skip tooth blade in 3/4" stock. Fun project!!! Mike'why buy it if you can build it'www.midlothianwoodworks.com
December 18, 201114 yr Wow Mike! Now that is a knife block! As a matter of fact that is just flat out extreme in every sense of the word. Mike, how did you get that darker sliver of wood wedged shaped like that? What an awesome piece, sure to be the center of many of a conversation for the new owners and their dinner guests. Thanks for posting Mike.John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker

December 18, 201114 yr Author Thanks JohnThe Ebony wedge is made up of 3 pieces of 3/4" stock which are tapered and glued in place.I do have to give credit to the client for such a unique design and giving plenty of details concerning the knife layout and dimensions that I used, although when I did the scale drawing it would have been almost 20" wide using his measurements. Had to scale it down just a little.Mike'why buy it if you can build it'www.midlothianwoodworks.com
December 18, 201114 yr  Mike, you turned a commonly used article into a work of art. Beautiful work. Dave

December 19, 201114 yr Great job Mike. Are those three holes and a slot in the base? If so what was the client going to use those for? Also the six holes above the base, what is the use for these? Again, excellant.
December 19, 201114 yr Author Thanks for the comments everyone. To Ron--- The 3 holes in the base are for spice shakers and the long slot is for a sharpening stone. The 6 slots are for some very expensive Japanese steak knivesMike'why buy it if you can build it'www.midlothianwoodworks.com
