WORKSHARP 3000 REVIEW

Featured Replies

A month ago I bought a #5 Stanley Bailey plane from John Morris and let me tell you it sure is nice. John sharpened the iron before shipping and it cut like butter. Keep in mind I have never owned or used a plane in my life. In my quest to understand the care and use for this fine tool I began watching several videos on just those topics. I learned about tuning the plane and during my education wile tuning this plane I discovered the blade was not square (no offense John). In my shop I only have a slow speed bench grinder for sharpening my turning tools and I wasn't about to take on the chore of squaring up the iron with that.

My wife bought me a WORKSHARP 3000 for Christmas and this morning I set it up and and commenced to square and sharpen the iron from the plane. After only a few minutes of squaring and sharpening I must say I was very impressed with the quality of this sharpening system. I installed the iron in the plane a commenced to flatten the edge of some hard maple left over from a cutting board project. after a few seconds of adjustment on the plane I was taking very very very fine shavings from the stock. They are so fine they're almost transparent.

I then took out some bench chisels and commenced to sharpening them and I came out with the same results as with the plane iron. I bought these chisels a few months back and they weren't even close to being square or as sharp as one would like but after only a few minutes on the WORKSHARP they are square and scary sharp and I mean SCARY! If you get a chance check out this system. I think you'll find it very useful in your shop. The Wife bought it from our local Woodcraft store and it came with the knife sharpener and a $20.00 gift certificate.

Thanks for the review. I am considering purchasing one of these machines. I have read lots of other great reviews on this so it is nice to read it first hand. Thanks again.

Mike, great review. I picked up one last year when Home Depot accidentally put them on sale online for 69.00. They honored the purchases. I found the same thing with my chisels when I put them on the worksharp the first time. I also like you got everything down and started sharping everything in the shop. It is a great machine to put an edge on and keep it scary sharp.

Great Mike! Great review too! And no offense taken on the squareness on the plane iron. I was wondering why the lateral lever had to be to one side for it to plane evenly!Grin.gif That is a great plane to have for your first one and I am glad your getting some great use out of it. Now the Worksharp 3000, I must have one. Thanks again Mike

John I think you'll really like it. I haven't tried the knife sharpener yet but will once the dust settles so to speak. Watch the included video for the set up and adjustment. One particular note is the abrasive disks that you adhere to the glass disks are not plainly marked as to their grits but you can feel the difference. Just make sure the two courser grits go on one glass disk and the finer are installed on the other disk one on each side. This tool is fast and easy to use once it's set up.
