Hexagon Potpourri Box

Featured Replies

My first attempt at mitered corners.  This was a great learning experience. Box is approx 5 inches wide by 3 inches high. Box sides are poplar.  Top and bottom of box made from scrap cherry.

Box pattern came from www.woodstore.net  I deviated slightly from the original pattern.  I planed the bottom down to 1/8" to fit into the grooves rather than rabbit the 1/4" stock.  I also reversed the lid as I liked the profile better.

I used pre-stain and General Finishes Cranberry Red stain, and shellac for the top coat.  Shellac was a bit difficult to work with.  Found myself fighting with dull spots.  Started application with a brush and switched to a lint free cloth.  Shellac was a premix and older than 6 months, which could have caused some of the problems from what I've read.  Any tips on shellac application would be appreciated.

Thanks for taking a look.

Mike,

Thank you!  I appreciate that.  I love mitered boxes.  The pattern also explained how to make a hexagon using a compass, so I plan to make larger hexagon boxes.   I figure after a hexagon, a four sided box should be a piece of cake.  Grin.gif

Sue the stain looks really good on the box. It sure brought the the two woods together nicely. That poplar looks really good stained.

John,

I appreciate you mentioning General finishes.  It's the best stain I have ever used.  Plan to buy more of their stains in different colors.  I had ran out of poplar which is why I used the scrap cherry pieces for the box.  After the fact, was concerned I would have trouble matching or even complimenting the cherry color.  This stain solved the problem.  Wipe on and wipe off - my kind of product!Grin.gif

John,

Thanks so much.  I realize there were things I should have done better - like sand the interior a little smoother, to name just one possible improvement.  But all in all, I'm just pleased as punch to have accomplished one of my goals which was to create a mitered box.  Seems there is always room for improvement.  :)
