About three weeks before Christmas, the neighbors asked if we could make their two little girls a play kitchen. She gave us a picture, as an example, of one she had seen on the Internet. It was a converted TV cabinet. We figured it would take longer to find something similar, than to start from scratch. This is the result.

It took just a little more that a 4×8 sheet of 3/4†plywood to build the carcass and doors- constructed with dadoes and rabbets. The face frame is made of 1 x white pine- put together with pocket screws. The unit is about 40+ inches tall and wide and about 15†deep. The door handles are just dowels and home made end pieces. The “stove†knobs were contributed by the neighbors. The faucet and knobs were turned/shaped from scrap maple. All the knobs have the mounting hardware epoxied in place.The sink is an “Ollies†stainless bowl. Curtains from the remnant section of the fabric store. The window is framed in pine scraps. The impressionist art is not Monet. All the doors are overlay with magnetic latches- didn’t realize how strongly they held until the little girls tried to open the doors! A piece of thin cardboard on the strike plate reduced the holding power. The “oven†has a plexiglass window.

They have a “stoveâ€, “ovenâ€, “sinkâ€, under sink storage, “frig/freezer†combination and a lovely view.

The paint scheme probably could have been a little more exciting but time was running out.

The parents were very pleased with the outcome; the little ones, not so much. Their words- “We wanted a new one!†followed my pouts and tears. Oh well.

They are kids, and kids aren't old enough to realize this beautiful creation you built will outlast anything they could buy.  I love all the details you have incorporated into the design.   It turned out just adorable!  One day they will appreciate what you have created.  They are just too young right now to understand the quality and the attention to detail you put into it.
