Oscillating Multi-Tools

Featured Replies

This past weekend I was working on tiling my downstairs bathroom. I needed to remove three pieces of tile from the hall going into the bathroom so I could change out the threshold. Now since I had a job you know they drill, it called for a new tool, right? I needed to get the grout out so I could remove those pieces of tile. So it was off to the local Lowe's store to see what I could locate. I had seen the mulit-tools demonstrated and one of the demonstrations was removing grout. So I had the image filed away and I was off tool shopping.

Let me tell you right up front, I did not do any research on these tools, I just bought the one I liked. I did find that most everyone seems to be making one of these now a days. Porter Cable, Dremel, Rigid, Fein, Bosch and the list goes on. Some are corded and some are cordless.

So I picked a cordless model, purchased the grout removal attachment, which by the way was for the dremel tool, the Bosch came with an adapter to use the Dremel attachments and headed home to give it a try. Wow, did it cut the old grout in a hurry. So in no time, I had the three pieces up and was ready to move on to other task.

After laying the new tile and getting it grouted, it was time to install the vanity. As you would know, the cold water connection came into the back of the vanity right where the middle drawer guide was attached in the back. So I made a new side to fit in the cabinet to attach the drawer guide to and cut it loose from the back. When attaching the new side, I needed to made some notches in the 3/4" plywood. So, I switched out attachments, put on the wood cutting blade that came with it and cut through the 3/4" ply like it was butter. It made the most perfect cuts, straight and it no time at all. So now the drawer guide was attached and the vanity put in place. Who ever did the plumbing before me glued the 1 1/2 pipe for the drain in instead of using a compression nut. So I had to cut off the PVC and redo the drain. You guessed it, the Multi-tool just cut right through the PVC in so fast and I had the plumbing fixed in a minute. Everything is hooked up, water runs and no drips.

So I can say, I have found a new friend in the tool collection for the shop. If you need to cut out for outlets in the wall, this little tool is the thing. If you haven't gotten one of these yet, you need to put it on your list of tools to add.

The Bosch is 12v Lithium-ion battery. The kit I purchased also came with the Bosch PS20 12 volt max pocket driver.

I've often looked at these tools but haven't tried any out. Do any of them come with or have detail sanding attachments? Thanks for the post John!

Sounds like a winner to me John.

This is one of those tools I really like but have not had the project to justify it.....yet.

But the day will come.

Mike, This one has a sanding attachment. I didn't not try that part yet, but I do intent to on the cedar chest that I am working on right now. Looks like it would be good to get into corners and tight places. It even has what they call a finger sanding attachment which is pretty small.

I have thought of getting one of these, too. But, like Allen, haven't had the right project- yet!

Thanks for the review. I am more impressed with Bosh tools. It is especially nice to have a wider range of attachment possibilities.

Lew

I'm in the same boat as Allen and Ken, I haven't really needed one yet, so i haven't seriously looked at them. Thanks for the review John. However I have been seriously looking at the new Rockwell drill / driver / impact combo tool, that I would get some serious use out of.

Ive had a corded dremel for a couple of years now. The dremel also has an adapter to run bosch attachments and also i think fein.  I must say that i use it for lots of varied tasks, Keep it in the trailer or truck all the time.
