January 8, 201214 yr I am on a roll here in this new year and it is really starting to worry me. I am so used to making plans to get stuff done in the shop and then having everything from "Honey Do's" to stampeding buffalo running through the shop to tweaking my back and being down for a week to keep me from doing the work I wanted to get done. So I guess I shouldn't complain and enjoy it while I can. Today my wife and I took a romantic drive out to our local Rockler store and then stopped in at the Elsinore Outlet Center where my wife bought 3 new pairs of pants (she got size 10's for the first time in 25 years so she was very happy which makes me happy). Then we got home and I was in the shop and starting to work at noon. So I was able to get all the planing, leveling, trimming, routing and sanding done on the 2 large cutting boards, 4 trivets and 16 coasters getting them all ready to put finish on tomorrow. During the sanding process I got to use my new iPod Nano and listen to some good Bible teaching from Chuck Missler on the book of Ephesians chapters 2 and 3 while I had the respirator and hearing protection ear muffs on all covered in sawdust. I got everything cleaned up and put away at 5pm and then got a big bowl of my wife's Chicken Tortilla Soup and sat down to watch the Detroit-New Orleans football playoff game. So it was a really good day today and after church tomorrow I will get the mineral oil on the boards and trivets and get Natural Danish Oil on the coasters and let them cure for a day or 2 before putting the polyurethane on them. January 8, 201214 yr I had a good day also. Glad you are getting it done. What did you decide on the coasters?John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
January 8, 201214 yr Author John,I am just doing them flat as opposed to drilling/routing out a shallow hole for the cup/can to sit in. I talked to my friend Darrell over at Rockler about it all and the options that I had. The best option would be to use the lathe to turn the hole or to make some grooves as opposed to using a large forstner bit or routing using a template. So I made 5 extras so that I can play with them on the lathe to see how it goes. The boards/trivets are all 1" thick and the coasters I milled down to 1/2". The one thing with those coasters is that the edges are more time consuming to sand than the boards/trivets which are thicker.Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.nethttp://www.awcreationsandwoodcrafts.com'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J.
