January 8, 201214 yr comment_35466 While waiting for my cutting board pieces to dry I put this pen together. It's an AERO pen kit that I've had for a while but wasn't sure what I wanted to match it with but after seeing a gentleman's wonderful pens on IAP that he laminates I decided to try one and this is what came out! My next one will be quite a bit thinner in the center and more in proportion to the pen kit. Thanks for viewing and all comments welcome! Report
January 8, 201214 yr comment_35479 Mike,That is beautiful. Â I really like the combination. Â It's very unique. Â Was the ebony and aluminum already in pen blank form, that you then laminated together? Or did you start with raw materials?SQHappiness is wood chips flying! Report
January 8, 201214 yr comment_35478 You guys have really stepped it up. Very nice pen Mike. Nice contrast with the ebony and aluminum. What did you use for finish? John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com Report
January 9, 201214 yr Author comment_35477 Thanks SQ!I started out with flat stock aluminium and a chunk of Ebony I picked up from CROSSCUT Hardwoods. I cut and drilled the aluminium to size then cut the Ebony to 3 different thicknesses and then epoxied these pieces to the brass tube and then turned it. SQ said:Mike,That is beautiful.  I really like the combination.  It's very unique.  Was the ebony and aluminum already in pen blank form, that you then laminated together? January 9, 201214 yr Author comment_35476 Thanks John!I sanded it to 12000 grit then finished with friction polish and then waxed it. I need to perfect a CA finish before I attempt on this material. Hopefully on my next one I'll use CA. John Moody said:You guys have really stepped it up. Very nice pen Mike. Nice contrast with the ebony and aluminum. January 13, 201214 yr Author comment_35470 Thanks Arlin! I plan on trying some others in the near future after I finish the 3D cutting board. I've been following the IAP website and have seen many a fine pen that are laminated. I'm just getting my feet wet with the segments but hope to advance with it because you can come up with some cool applications. Arlin Eastman said:MikeWell done on the lamination and also turning the blank too. There are several ways to do this, I have done it a 25* 30* and 45* cuts with aluminum, brass, and copper. They come out outstanding.Arlin Report
