January 14, 201214 yr It's been a few weeks since I started this project for our local community college. One of the professors wanted some storage lockers for his boxcar where his students store the Land Survey gear they use during outside labs. He didn't want anything fancy, nothing finished, and a small utility table to be able to pull a stool under and also to hold some 12 volt batteries during charging. So I got to submerge myself in 3/4 dado's and screw and glue land! I love these projects, no brainer's and just fun because the pucker factor is non existent. Thanks for looking!!! January 14, 201214 yr Author So true Gene so true. These cabs are built like tanks and weigh a ton. 3/4" birch ply with a 3/4" ply back as well instead of the typical 3/8"ths. I built them to take abuse, and to take hard hits and heavy gear. Everything dadoed, screwed glued and tattooed. The shelves have aluminum edge trim on them so the ply edges don't splinter up. I'll have to go back in a year and install some sheet metal on the floor of the lockers, that was an after thought by the customer but we decided to let the floors get used up pretty good first then I'll roll back and install the sheet metal on the floors. Thanks for the comments guys. Gene Howe said: Really nice, John! Good cabinets are not judged according to the pucker factor. January 15, 201214 yr WOW! 3/4 all around!! Heavy and sturdy. Well, I guess earthquakes do happen in CA. Several years ago, NAPA asked me to build 6 new Point Of Sale counters each for 8 stores. 48 simple cubes, open in back with a kick in front. Specs were 3/4 MDF covered in NAPA Blue laminate inside and out. All with shelves and 16 with cash drawers. Talk about heavy! Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
