January 15, 201214 yr I am not much of a duck hunter. However, many of my friends are. Occasionally they will ask for a hand turned call. Here are some of my recent efforts. From left to right. Maple Burl with copper band. Cocobolo with copper band. Maple Burl. All employ Echo inserts. Finish is dipped lacquer.Â
January 15, 201214 yr Those are all something to really be proud of. I especially like the way the copper accents the wood.Greghttp://www.thesawdustfactory.net/

January 15, 201214 yr Great job on those Greg. I love the wood and the copper bands. Nice shape to the calls also. What did you put on them for finish? John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
January 15, 201214 yr Very nice! Beautiful finish and the copper is a great touch. Keebler and Nabisco are green with envy. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
January 16, 201214 yr Sorry Greg I went back and re-read and saw you used a dipped finish.John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
January 20, 201214 yr Author I apologize that it has taken so long to reply. It has been sort of a hectic week.I assure you Donnie I am not a call maker. I am a barrel turner. We have a grand champion caller and maker in town. Actually 2. The older won the first grand championship. The younger just won the junior grand championship. They make the barrels and sound boards. I believe Echo does a fine job.The maple burl was acquired in a trade from Bob Kloes. It was super solid and required no stabilization. The hunter that got it says it is the only maple burl call he has seen. If it can bring in a duck, he can do it.John Moody yes the finish is dipped lacquer. I am afraid after more research that lacquer may not be the best choice. Time will tell. They aren't for sale and I expect them to stay local. I can always refinish as needed. Thank you all for looking, and for your kind comments.
