January 24, 201214 yr On Saturday I picked up 106 BF of 5/4 Beech to make 10 large frames for my church to hold rotating printed media that will be hung on the walls in the foyer and main hall. Typically I will have long boards cut down for the project for easier transport and handling in the shop, but since I had to work with as little waste as possible on the church's dime I took the 11' boards whole to make sure I got the most out of the boards. But those 11' long 5/4 boards were heavy and joy to toss around and get up onto the miter saw stand to rough cut on the SCMS. One of the boards was 15" wide which was especially fun as I couldn't use the the SCMS. So I had to break out the saw horses and cut it with a my jig saw as my circular saw had the rail plate attached to base for cutting sheet goods and I didn't want to have to remove it. But I got everything done so it was off to the table saw to get everything cut to the right widths and lengths. I will be making 5 square frames 43"x43" square with 7.5" wide pieces to hold 30"x30" printed media that can be changed from a slot on the top. I will also be making 5 rectangle frames 36"x26 with 4" wide pieces to hold 30"x20" printed media that can be changed from a slot on the top. As for the waste, that worked out well. I tossed all the odd cut offs that were not usable but kept the larger pieces which I can use for other stuff as well as a 9' board just in case I have something go south. If I don't have to use the 9' board then I will take it back for a refund as they will take lumber back as long as it is 8' long or more. So tomorrow I will get the rabbits and slots cut and maybe start gluing up the large 43"x43" frames as those they need to have those ASAP. January 24, 201214 yr Allen Good luck with your project. Beech is a great wood to work with.No greater Loves than God, Family, Friends, country, the sight of flying chips and the smell of saw dust.
January 24, 201214 yr Very good Allen. Looks like you got a nice assembly line going there. Beech is a great even grained lumber that is perfect for what your doing. A nice even tone that will sit in the background and let the information pop. Very nice Allen! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
January 24, 201214 yr Looks as though you have a plan and it is working out. Those big boards can be a problem to handle and move around. We'll be keeping an eye out of the progress.John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
