February 7, 201214 yr  just a "heads up". I'm starting another re-hab of a plane, tow in fact.    Seems they had a busy year last year.   Time to take them apart and clean them up: The Victums:The one at the bottom while be first.   Nasty on the inside.   Spray paint , two colours in fact, that need to go away.   This plane has a tapered iron to it.  Blade width is 1-3/4 and the body is 2" wide. Frog will take a little cleaning as well.     Well, just a heads up.. February 7, 201214 yr Just a tad smaller then the 4. I love my #3 Steve, it seem to come in handy when the block plane won't do, but the 4 is just tad too big. The 3 fits the hand well, the only problem I have with the 3 is it takes some getting used to, just that small difference in size it tends to skip across rather then smoothly running across. After a couple swipes though it settles down and is a real joy to use.Good luck on the restore buddy. Can't wait to see the final outcome. February 9, 201214 yr Author An update:  Plane #1: Frog cleaned upAnd back in it's place on a clean and shiny body. Plane #2:  taken apart, body was very messy.  Like the one Hornblower episode: Lobsters and Frogs...we have an ugly frog, also red (that is going to change)Froggy also has some extra hardware:Apparently a way to advance the frog to close the mouth?   And a look at the cap ironUnlike Plane #1, this is not a tapered iron.    Funny looking cap screw hole as well.   Just an update.... February 10, 201214 yr Author   Looking for a quick way to de-paint old RED.    I'm going with a wire wheel type (cup) at the drill press/hand held drill.   Got to lay in a supply of sandpaper tomorrow, along with a belt for the sander.    Ol'Red is scheduled to be a scrub plane.  First though, I'll have to get rid of some scratches on the sole, from finding a few nails.   Oh well..... February 10, 201214 yr Author 1/64-1/32 deep.  All in front of the mouth.  Sole is thick enough I can belt sander them out, just will take some time, is all.    MIGHT, just might make new wood handles for old Red.     We'll see.  'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
February 10, 201214 yr SOunds like a plan, are you going to use a jig to keep the sole 90 and flat? It really wouldn't take that long to sand out those scratches on paper on a flat surface, I would think you'd have better luck keeping it 90 and flat and more control. Just MHO! February 10, 201214 yr Author  An update alert:   Got SOME work done on clean up, AND a step backwards.  Got some of the red paint to leave Froggy is looking better from this anglethis side needs some more work. I had to use a Mill file, and a sander to get this far. As for the sole..I think you can see some of the gouges?   I will clamp this up in the vise later, and take them out.   The sides are also "Vizined"  and shiny.   Topside is another matter:Cast into the nose, is No.  1 .    Yeah right, that's a Number 1!    About the same size as a No.3, though.   The "step backwards"?    The rear tote fell onto the wood kitchen floor, and BROKE!   Both kanoobies are Bakelite!   Looks like I have some wood to mill up, don't it? February 11, 201214 yr Author  I got the tote "Super-glued" back together.   Cost a whole $1.07 with tax.   Still might make new wood handles at a later date.   Tote made "Mission Style" out of QSWO?   Maybe?  I have to work this weekend ( yuck!) next day is Tues.  Maybe I can finish this project up.    'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
February 11, 201214 yr Author Added a third poor soul to this project today.     Stanley No.110 is now cleaned up.    Sole will be a little while sanding up the grooves, though. A few photos:Cap iron/chip breaker, with a 5 and a "g" stamped into itThe stamp reads C157.    Up front, there is a No. 110 behind the knob, in front of the knob is STANLEY.and the sole.  none of those scratches are very deep, can barely feel the deepest ones.    NO CRACKS anywhere.   This is also the FIRST plane I ever bought, back in the 60s.  Just needs a little more work, and it will be ready to go.
