February 13, 201214 yr comment_34063 Ok after spending most of the evening looking at various places for a bowl gouge that has a fingernail grind on it and only coming up with something that is 3x my price range or things that are out of stock and backordered for a month or more, I will ask all of you turners. Where can I get a bowl gouge that has a fingernail grind on it for less than $100? It can be either 1/4" or 3/8" I prefer 1/4 because I already have a 3/8 gouge that I intend to eventually take to a fingernail grind. I don't even mind if it's a mini tool for very small items, that's what I mostly do anyway. February 13, 201214 yr comment_34067 Have you looked at Thompson? They are highly regarded, and for a 3/8" through 5/8" in your price range. I did not see a 1/4" though. I am not sure a 1/4" bowl gouge is such a good idea. That is awfully small for the amount of torque that will be applied to it. Thompson tools are sold un-handled. However, a lot of turners prefer that so they can customize a handle to their style. Doug does offer modular handles and can fix you up with a 3/8" deep V gouge with handle for less than $100. February 13, 201214 yr comment_34064 You can grind them to just about any profile you want. Do a google search on sharpening turning tools and it will explain how the different grinds are achieved! Report
