February 27, 201214 yr  Is almost back in service.   Blade needs a good sharpening, and those handles are very rough. Everything is cleaned up:The "blade group", That iron is HUGE!An iron from a#4 is on the left, next a frogCouldn't quite get down in those holes, oh well. Ugly, ain't it?   This is the "stock" tote.  It will go back on, until new ones are made, and now for the rest of the storyThat is aDefiance #3 in front.   Meet Mister Bailey all 24" of him.   This is a type 9, Bailey #8c.  Anything this big will be called MISTER!  I do know where some Balck Walnut is stashed, just in case I get tired of those rough handles.  One more look at this guyStamped into the side, just above the sole, are the letters "W" "R".    As soon as the blade gets a new edge, I'll take this guy for a test drive, or will he take me? February 28, 201214 yr Author  Metal must have been real thin around the mouth opening:That is both the iron and the frog showing through.  This is the way I bought the plane.   The adjustor knob is solid Brass as wellOne more look at the blade group, all nice and cleaned upWe are getting there.  Blade is now almost sharp, getting a sandpaper treatment later. Thanks for looking in. PS: for those in West Central Ohio ( and you Hoosiers) this store just opened a few weeks ago, in downtown Sidney, Ohio.  Nice write-up in the local newspaper, too.   They still have some nice old handtools for sale, as well. February 28, 201214 yr Author  Some of the "tools' i used for these restorations:  A brass brush (with a wood handle of course) (at work) Can of Stainless Steel Cleaner, can of Citrus Mold Cleaner ( used to clean the steel Molds we use), and a purple scratchy pad to scrub with. Fine sandpaper, Mill files, Wire wheels for the drill ( brass and steel wire), and a brass "putty" knife.  A "rattle can" of Rustoleum Gloss Black paint. Lots of Elbow Grease, used up a 55 gal. barrel, so far.  To clean the bottom of mister bailey, I used a steel wire brush, again with a wood handle.  And the answer to Mr. Morris' question:   Might get a set of #4 twins? Or, a "litter" of #1 Stanleys ( I WISH, $$$$$) 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
February 29, 201214 yr Author Going to TRY the shop today, and maybe tomorrow.    Taking Mister Bailey for a "test drive" on some Black Walnut, prepping it to make some handles. I downloaded a few profiles from LEE Valley for the totes.   Knobs are the easy part, just put a blank in the lathe and watch the fun. There is some 8/4 out there, so maybe a 12" long piece MIGHT come up "missing".  Planing on three handle sets.  One for an #8, one for a #4 sized plane, and a #3 sized plane.    Next, would be the finish on these handles.......... March 1, 201214 yr Author  Turned a knob, carved a handle for Mister bailey. Then took him for a test drive on some Black Walnut:The test drive resultsa new knob and a new tote.   Still need to finish them up, then Mister Bailey will be ready to join his Elder brother #129 A Fore plane, and a Jointer planer, sitting on a Planer. March 5, 201214 yr Author Put a coat of stain/varnish on the handles last night:One more clear coat, and a good buffing, and Mister bailey is ready for work.Black Walnut for the handles, Minwax Dark Walnut stain, and a little poly mixed in... 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
