March 1, 201214 yr  Went to the "Barn" tonight.   Took the #8c for a test drive on some Black Walnut:Nice curly ones Then, it was time to start making some knobs out of that walnut.  Fired up the old lathe:and turned three knobs.  I then started to fit them onto three of my planes, the #8c was first:Then the Defiance and the Great neck since they were in the #3-#4 size range: That tote is just a test fit.  I did get the #8c's tote almost done: Still some work to do, but it will wait for the weekend, four hours is about my limit out in the shop, any more 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
March 1, 201214 yr Author  Patterns for the totes were downloaded from LEE Valley Tools.    I used a #5 pattern for the #8c,  and a #3-#4 pattern for the other planes.   They also supplied a pattern for a #2.    It shows where to drill which hole, what size drill bit to use, what angle to cut the bottom at, and a basic outline of each tote.   It also has a step by step direction sheet, for those out there that read directions.  Still got a lot of shaping and sanding to do on these. March 4, 201214 yr Author Shaping these totes is proving to be a challenge to someone that doesn't do ANY carving, not even a Turkey.    I tried a few different rasps, round ones, half rounds, and even a flat one.   Too much roughness, too slow going.    A sharp knife? Nope, ain't getting it, either. Cut some belts from the beltsander into strips. The idea there was to use it like a shoe shine cloth.  Again, not cutting the mustard.   Hmmmmm.   Ah, back to the beltsander!     I use it to sharpen blades with, by clamping the top handle to the bench, locking it "On", and hand sanding parts.    Sooooo, I clamped the old "Dragster' to my bench, with that small front wheel pointing up.    Turned it on.   And handsanded the tote to shape in about 10 minutes flat.  All that is left for tote #2 is a finish sanding.    Tote #3 will be tomorrow, and the #8c Bailey tote will also be sanded then.   Rasps are nice, but not fast enough.  After the totes are done, I think I'll soak them (and the front knobs) in some BLO. That event will be the very FIRST time using that stuff.    Then maybe a rattle-can of lac----er to top it off? March 4, 201214 yr Author  PICTURES!   Of this little project.  First off, the "sanding center":"C" clamped to the side of the "bench" I'm using down in the basement.    And, a few looks at the (now) sanded handlesThe #5 pattern handle shaped to match MY hand.  This will go on the Bailey #8cand a #3-#4 pattern handle.  Some slight mods to fit my hand better.   This will be on the Defiance #3 Another look? A top view.  The hardest part of these handles is getting the holes drilled right, AND to the right depth. A look at them on board their "rides"....The #3 with that huge front knob ( fits the hand better) and the Great Neck #1 ( size #4 stanley) with that high knob.   That knob MAY get a re-work order .    Anyway, looks better than black Bakelite.  A look at the old handle on the Bailey... New one looks alot better, right?  IF any one wants the "old' handles and knobs, let me know...... 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'

March 5, 201214 yr Author  Just put a coat on tonight.    A dark Walnut stain was added to some gloss poly I had on hand.    I did all three planes, tow backsaws, and even a wood handled screwdriver that was unlucky enough to be in the area.     Will "buff' all of these out tomorrow, and then post some pictures.   So, this be a warning to all the "Purists" out there.......
