March 2, 201214 yr Well as I sit here this morning writing this post we are glued to the TV as we have tornado's in the area once again. So far they somewhat have bypassed our area but there have been two on the ground this morning about 45 to 50 miles East of me. We have a weather briefing this morning at 11:00 to see what the rest of the day is to be. At the briefing yesterday we were told this morning would be mild and the worse weather would be this evening beginning around 7:00pm. Suppose to start a season of Craft Shows tonight, but the show is outside so not sure we are going to be doing that or not. Been a bit busy trying to get ready though and finished up a batch of cutting boards. I do three sizes of the boards, a small (8x11), Medium (12x11) and a large (17x11). This is just part of the last batch. I have a few that are ready to run through the sander. So what have you been working on lately or what do you have on your bench? What are the plans for woodworking this weekend. Will you be working in the shop, home improvement, HDL or just hanging out. Share with us your projects for this weekend. March 2, 201214 yr Take your raincoat tonight John. I'm finishing up a side table for a client. I'll be fitting the drawer today so hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to stain. BTW John, get rid of all of those tornados before I visit.Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
March 2, 201214 yr Stay safe, John!As for a project, need to make a trip to the planing mill to pick up some Red Oak. Going to start a lectern for my brother-in-law. Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!
March 2, 201214 yr It depends what the weather does here also. We're in a winter storm warning now, and it's getting pretty dark here now. I'll be doing what I can on the shop. Â Larry OWWM Forum Host
March 2, 201214 yr I actually have some "Challenge Coin Stands" on my workbench! I had been wanting to make a few for some time, but never had the extra time. I finally decided on Wednesday that I would take a couple of days for some fun work, so I went and got some 10/4 maple and started up using John's design. I got them all sanded and put some danish oil on them yesterday, so tonight or tomorrow I will run then through the buffing wheel and top coat them with some wax. After that......TAXES!!!Stay safe out there John!Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.nethttp://www.awcreationsandwoodcrafts.com'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. March 2, 201214 yr John, the boards look fantastic. Hope you can beat the weather. Stay safe.Charles, nice looking hair pin. Hope you are out of the paths, too.I'm head to Phoenix on Sat. to spend some $$ at the Rockler sale. Then on to Tucson to spend some time with my son and his new puppy. The closest I'll come to woodworking is drooling over the stuff at Rockler.Sunday will be spent driving home. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' March 3, 201214 yr I'll be in the planning stages of the colonial display shelf for my client, and I am also going to work on getting that rocker finished up and off my bench making way for the newest project. I'll snap some glam shots of the rocker and get it up on our www.courtlandwoodworks.com site and see if we can find a new home for it. I had planned on putting it in one of our galleries up in our local art town in the hills, but I am going to try to let it go without paying someone a commission. March 3, 201214 yr I glued up a dozen patterns for mini birdhouses last night and will probably glue up that many more tonight and hopefully get them all cut Sunday. GregScroll Saw forum hosthttp://www.thesawdustfactory.net/
March 3, 201214 yr Well, I had my schedule revised a bit yesterday. Thanks to my lack of attention and some help from a pocket hole drill bit, I have a penny sized gouge just below my index finger on my left hand. As I told John Moody, it is too far from my heart to kill me but I'll stay off it for a few days. Remarkable it isn't sore.........yet.Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
March 5, 201214 yr Author Well we made it through the weekend and starting a new week. I spent a good part of Saturday just picking up limbs and things blown into the yard from the storms that passed through on Friday. No damage, just stuff to cleanup. I did get in the shop for a while and posted my First Scroll Saw Project. I also got a little sanding done on the five cutting boards that I finished Thursday night.Took the day off yesterday and just spent relaxing with the family. So how did you fair with your weekend projects? I know Ron had is schedule adjusted, how about the rest of you? Did you get any shop time?John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
March 5, 201214 yr No shop time. Did get to Rockler in Phoenix and picked up some needed (?) toys and supplies. Then on to Tucson and spent a day and a half with my son. Just the two of us. I drug him to Woodworker's Source and picked up 30 board ft of 8/4 walnut. He looked around at all the exotics there and informed me that the next thing I made for him should be from Madagascar Ebony.  He settled for a Cheese Steak sandwich. A weekend well spent, I think. John, Those bowls are awesome! How would you finish the work on them if you didn't have a lathe? A lot of bowl sander work, and hand sanding the outside? Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
March 5, 201214 yr Author Gene, that is exactly how you would have to do it. In the book she suggest a spindle sander and a lot of hand sanding. SQ has turned a few of them and I think it is much quicker. I hope to put them on the lathe tonight and see how it goes.By the way, thanks for the complement on the cutting boards.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
