March 2, 201214 yr Hi EveryoneMy middle son is getting married this month and after looking around for a stand for the wedding cake wanted to know if I could make one. Well you know me—couldn’t refuse the opportunity to make a new project so here it is. Made from Peruvian walnut the top is 16†in diameter with a 10†base and 9†tall turned pedestal. Used an Ogee bit for edge detail, sanded to 400 grit and finished with 4 coats of wipe -on poly. Fun little project. MIke Mike'why buy it if you can build it'www.midlothianwoodworks.com
March 2, 201214 yr That looks real nice! More important it will be something that the kids will hold on to due to not only what it was used for but for who made it. March 3, 201214 yr Love that wipe on poly Mike! Your safe using it here on our forum! The Walnut is beautiful, where did you pick up Peruvian Walnut? And last but not least, your craftsmanship is smooth, clean and just right, beautiful design and lines. I love your choice of edge profile for the tray, and your turning is just right, not too over done, and not to simple, but perfect for a wedding. It all fits really well together. March 3, 201214 yr Author Thanks for the comments guysTo John--I get the Peruvian walnut from Wall Lumber In NC. Costs a little more than Black walnut ($7bf) but I love the consistency of the color and grain and it works very much like mahogany. In case anyone is wondering, the base and top are attached with 1" tenons turned while I made the pedestal.Mike'why buy it if you can build it'www.midlothianwoodworks.com
