March 5, 201214 yr This is a project I did to donate to our church to raffle off to help with the new building funds. Hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did cutting it. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
March 5, 201214 yr Wayne that is amazing. I can't imagine the patience it must take to make those cuts. Excellent work and it is beautiful. March 5, 201214 yr That is some fine work Wayne. I love it. As Ron stated, what incredible patience the scrollers exhibit. I could not do that. I admire you guys for the delicate touch you need to complete these amazing projects. Great job Wayne. How do you guys keep the smaller pieces from cracking off?John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
March 5, 201214 yr Wayne, Very nice work! I've got to get my equipment done, so I can start getting some enjoyment out of it. Â Larry OWWM Forum Host
March 5, 201214 yr Author Thanks for all the compliments. To keep the smaller fragile pieces from breaking of, you use a zero insert. For me that usually means taping a playing card down or some other form of very thin cardboard. The other part is keeping a sharp blade in, controlling your speed and controlling any vibration that may happen.Larry I am looking forward to seeing some of you work with your scroll saw.Greg, yes I made the frame and cut the glass also. I like to do as much in house as possible.Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.

March 6, 201214 yr Author FredThis whole thing was cut out of red oak. The portrait was 1/2 thick, the frame was custom made to the piece. The portrait was stained with Puritan Pine and the frame with Dark Walnut. I used a satin finish on the portrait and high gloss on the frame. The inner frame which is hard to see in the picture is also red oak, then ebonized and finish with a flat finish to blend in with the black felt back ground.Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.

March 6, 201214 yr Wayne - "black felt background", eh? Â Have often wondered about using felt but was always afraid of it wrinkling when putting it on. Â How did you do it, my friend?Fredaka Pop's Shopwww.pops-shop.comEX-21'Don't complain about the storm - learn to dance in the rain.'
March 6, 201214 yr Fred I use felt all the time, I just glue it on like any other backing and really haven't had any problems with wrinkling. Fred Wilson said:Wayne - "black felt background", eh?  Have often wondered about using felt but was always afraid of it wrinkling when putting it on.  How did you do it, my friend?Fredaka Pop's Shopwww.pops-shop.comEX-21'Don't complain about the storm - learn to dance in the rain.'
March 6, 201214 yr Author FredGluing felt down is pretty easy. I either use a spray permanent adhesive or a tube of E 6000 that you can pick up at any fabric store. All I do is spray the backing board and stretch the felt over it, smooth it and let dry. Never had a problem with it wrinkling for me. Hope this helps.Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
