Tool Review: Bad Axe 14" Sash Saw

Featured Replies

I know I have a saw problem. Last Thursday I received my 14" sash saw filed x-cut from Mark Harrell at Bad Axe Toolworks. WOW! I don't know where to start. First of all, this saw is sexy. My girl friend is jealous. That said, let's talk about how it cuts. I have been using everyday for five days cutting mostly red oak and hard maple. I don't own a table saw and all of my cross cuts are done by hand. This saw flies through wood. I use about half the strokes with the Bad Axe than with any other premium or vintage saw I own. Mark's skills at saw filing are unmatched. The saw sings as it cuts and takes little effort from me to saw true. It is easy to start and follows a knife line dead on. Another advantage that Bad Axe has is the custom options when choosing your saw. You can choose plate thickness, fastener type, and even what kind of metal the spine is made from. He offers 3 wood choices for the handle (cherry, walnut, and mesquite) and crafts the handle to fit your hand. I have large hands so this is a big deal to me. It is the only saw I own where the bottom horn doesn't dig into my hand. It truly feels like an extension of my arm. Also, all of his saws (except for the to smallest) are available in either rip, x-cut, or hybrid filing. You will have to check out his website to learn more.
Did I mention how well this sucker cuts? It is truly incredible.
I had mine tricked out with a stainless steel back and fasteners, a walnut handle, and x-cut filing. I was asked by Mark what woods I worked with most and he filed the saw to suit. It has earned a permanent spot in my till and I will be purchasing another soon.
The only downside was that it took 16 weeks from the time I ordered it until it came. But after using it, I think it was worth the wait. The price? $265 with the options I chose. Money well spent. I will ise this saw for the rest of my life.

thanks for the review Adam. That is a good looking saw and sounds like it works as good as looks.

I like the hang of the handle too.

Adam, sorry I missed this review! Great job and thanks for taking the time to review it and work it out. I have been following Bad Axe on FB and I love their tools and their small shop mentality. Quality wreaks throughout their work.

So, no table saw! Man, I am envious. Good job buddy.
