March 8, 201214 yr I just finished a table for a customer that I really don't like. The customer sent me a picture along with the size the table should be. I built it to their specs but I cringed all the way through the project. I don't like the design, color, finish or hardware. I do however like the color of their money.  Here's the culprit:  Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
March 8, 201214 yr Once, Mimi asked me to make a "server side table" with a drawer. Everything got finished up and placed in the room. She hated it. Although it was made using the "Golden Ratio" it did look completely out of place. Ended up cutting off the drawers and replacing the top. Looks much better (IMO) Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!
March 8, 201214 yr I hear you on that one. I do try to steer people along a path to make a better looking project, but it is ultimately up to them. Especially if they are paying for it. If it makes you feel better, you can take the photo and run it through "Photoshop" and make it look like you want and then add it into your digital portfolio. March 9, 201214 yr Yes I did, those darn baseball trophies I made. Good money makers but ugly as all get out. Not sure I will carry the contract again, I really just hated them. The only things they had going for them was the color.Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
March 9, 201214 yr Yep, recently I started in on a stress buster little fun project shaping a bowl from a block of walnut. I cut the bowl to size, dish out the center of the blank with my right angle carver to form the bowl and I shape the outsides as well. Then I take a chisel and shape some interesting patterns into the outside. This one turned out horrible. It's funny, even though I can see it shaping up to be a bad form, I still keep going. Hoping that by some magical power it's going to leap out and turn itself into master piece. So I just kept plugging away at it and it just got worse and worse. So after 2 hrs I finally cut my losses and set it aside, it's a catchall for tiny screws and whatnots now.I see what you mean with yours Ron. The top appears bulky, the big knob in the front, it's overall appearance is clunky and big for such a small table. But that's what the customer wanted. March 10, 201214 yr Author Yeah John but the dead presidents took away much of the ugliness. The customer picked it up last night and loved it. Go figure! Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
