Friday, March 9th, What's on Your Woodworking Agenda?

Featured Replies

Here we are at the beginning of daylight savings time again. Be sure you Spring forward (move your clock up an hour) this Saturday night. So we will begin to have more daylight in the evenings. How does that effect your shop time? Do you find you have more or less shop time with the longer daylight in the evening? In some cases it might mean more yard and home improvement work and even though thet might send you to the shop for tools, you don't work on woodworking projects as much.

Also do you have a year round shop? Heat for the winter and AC for those hot summer days.

Well for me this weekend it is starting today. I am heading to a saw mill about an hour away. I took about 500 bf of QSWO there in November to be dried. I haven't heard from the mill owners and now when I call it goes to an answering machine. I am afraid of what I might find when I get there today or don't find.

But if it is there I have an order for five porch swings to get started on. If it is gone, I will be loosing a job and a lot of lumber.

I will also be laying out the case for a bow front table that is on order and try to finish the skirt for a cedar chest. Enough to keep my mind busy this weekend.

What is on your agenda this weekend? Are you building a project, working on a home improvement project, checking off items on the HDL, or enjoying your favorite hobby? Share your weekend with us and post progress pictures if you can and then maybe a finished picture when you complete it.

Have a great weekend, and remember to spring forward Saturday night.

We have all been struggling with being sick the past couple of weeks, so between my wife, daughter and I there has been a lot of coughing, sniffling and wheezing going on as well as multiple rounds of antibiotics and steroids. But Sylar our Schnauzer has been happy as he loves to curl up on the couch with you when you are sick. Come to think of it, he may be the culprit and getting us all sick so he can get snuggled with. Devious critter that Sylar!

Now that we are getting warmer and the grass and weeds have been growing, I have had to get some much needed yard work done this week as well as doing some work on the lawn mower. Yesterday and today I am dealing with hacking down the weeds on the back slope and trimming the trees. I will have to make multiple trips to the dump to get rid of it all as well. I have had to put off doing the taxes for the week until I get some of these things caught up, but once the trees and slope are done it will be tax time. After the taxes get done, I have some projects to start on and I am excited about making up some prototypes that will serve a long term goal of making things that I can actually sell and make a profit on. But for now the only woodworking that is going on is the hacking off of tree limbs on my over grown trees on the slope.

John,

After taking last weekend off, I'm behind. Projects are piling up.

These band saw boxes still need the edges eased and final sanded. Then the first coat of finish by Sunday. There is another walking stick to finish and need to dress some walnut for 4 more different Band saw boxes.

Herding cats. In this instance, herding snakes. These two boxes are destined for clients on Okinawa. I call them Habu Boxes. The Habu is an extremely venomous snake native to Okinawa. So venomous that, if a G.I. is bitten, he must leave Okinawa because the anti venom will save his life only once.

The box in the foreground is walnut and maple.

The SR71s based in Okinawa were called "Habu" by the locals. The nickname became so prevalent that the Air Force adopted a patch worn by pilots who flew missions over hostile territory.

After playing golf, I'll continue working on a curved lid jewelry box for my wife and my order from Crafts USA should be here with some pen kits. Unfortunately my work week starts Saturday evening.

Still debating what to do with my rocker back braces and light colored wood. Not sure if I am going to shave off the lite wood and re-glue the correct wood up.

Meanwhile, my Tiger Maple is on its way from Bob Kloes to build a colonial display shelf for my customer. Bob snapped off some pics of the lumber and man is it beautiful! Can't wait for it to arrive.

Hopefully I'll get this cabinet for the out-feed table finished this week-end.  Been taking way too long for this little project.  Just got too many things that cam up and just could not get the shop time I need for this.  Below is a picture of what I got done so far.

As for question of year round shop I have 3 electric oil radiators for heat.  They are slow to heat up, but they are quiet.  Also has window air conditioner for summer cooling.

Working on a second crown of thorns, also have a memory box in the works and some word art for the Mrs. Saturday is hair cut day, and a birthday party for my great niece who is 3 this year, cute as all too. I really need some time to pull some maintenance on my machines so hopefully later this week that will happen. I'll get some pics up as soon as I take them. My shop is in the bottom of my house, I have 2 electric heaters for the winter and no a/c but it stays reasonably nice in the summer.

God bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.

A new Saturday project came up this morning.  I just returned from a cabinet shop that is going out of business.  I came home with about 150 BF of 5/4 cherry.  Good price too.  In fact, I'll have to go to church twice tomorrow.   Now, where to put it.

Wow, guys some great projects. Hope you all got to make good progress on them. My weekend got changed. I got a call about 3:30 am on Saturday morning. Had to go into work and didn't get things back up and running until 4:00 pm Saturday afternoon. Pretty much wiped out my woodworking this weekend.

I did get a little time this afternoon to finish up five cutting boards. I guess I'll work on some things this week in the evenings as much as I can.

Just goes to show, you never know when you are going to get an interruption. Oh well I keep getting told that is why I make the big bucks. 24.gif
