March 9, 201214 yr Hi, everybody. I am looking for a vintage " face" vise like the kind made by Record. It is for my personal bench and will go in the "tail" position. I have found myself in need of an end vise lately and a vise of this type would be the easiest to retrofit. I have considered a wagon vise but installing would be way too much hassle. I know there are some good modern ones but I like the vintage look and craftsmanship. I am sketchy about ones posted on eBay because who knows how well they will work. That said, if anyone has an old Record (or other maker) vise that you keep tripping over and would like to sell it to a good home, drop me a line. Thanks everyone.Adam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine Woodworking
March 10, 201214 yr I hope you find it Adam.As far as a vise in the tail position, I am right there with ya. I need a completely newly designed bench myself with a tail and face vise. Since I've become more reliant on my planes and shaves, the tail vise paired up with some strategically placed dogs seems something I am needing desperately these days. I am tired of hauling out the long clamps and making do in a pinch! Here are a couple sites that I love and they are worth joining as a club member as well.Mid-West Tool Collectors AssociationandFine Tool JournalBoth have some nice tools from collectors and auctions coming up soon.John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops

They are not hard to make. The biggest challenge is the wood screw. Roy Underhil published his trick for making a wood screw in one of his booksMine is to make a router box and use bent sharpened hack saw blade inset an an angle to start the pitch feed. The rest of the vice is wood, and angle, iron and steel flat bar stock. Here's some infohttp://www.lie-nielsen.com/pdf/TailViseInstructions.pdfyou can tap that for design considerationsThis guy uses Roy Underhill's trickhttp://www.jeffgreefwoodworking.com/pnc/ShopProj/woodvice/Really traditionalhttp://www.kcwoodworkersguild.org/Education/Articles/Making%20Your%20Own%20Tools%20-%20Shoulder%20Vice.pdfHere is a buildhttp://www.bt3central.com/showthread.php?t=26069&highlight=viceYA gotta register to see the picsI'd have skinned the ways with steel.
