Rust Hunter, Part III

Featured Replies

While out and about this afternoon, coming back from the post office (another care package) i stopped at three other stores.    First one, didn't have any tools on hand, although the "partner'  was at an estate sale, with tools listed.

Went around the block ( walkin' fer me 'ealth) entered a second store, and paid a pricely sum of $2 for a rip saw ning-rustysaws001-32504-21.jpg?width=750Ok, ok, so that's a PLYWOOD handle.  Not after the handle, I'm after those sawnuts.   Let's see $7.50 ea for NEW ones, or two whole dollars for three, AND a medallion.  medallion says "Warrented'  and Superior wrapped around an "eagle' looking thingy.   There is a split in-between two plys.   Oh well.    Went next door to the third store on this Rust hunt>  ning-rustysaws002-32504-43.jpg?width=750Pretty, ain't he?     Also $2.     A Disston D8    Brass medallion with the keystone, and DISSTON  U.S.A.  on it.     Big old sway back rip saw.  WITH a thumbhole handle.    I can re-hab, and clean this bad boy up.    I did find some saw files in late FIL's tools box.    Might try a sharpening as well.   Sawnuts are missing, but, I can always walk back downtown, and spend another $2 for more saw nuts.

As for the saw currently under re-hab?    Going out to the "Barn this weekend, and finish shaping the walnut handle.    Sanded up, if will be ready for some finish...  One last look at the two NEWBIESning-rustysaws003-32504-48.jpg?width=750Yep, that one saw does have a "Hanging Hole' in it.   Expected when one only pays $2...Grin.gif

The handplanes must have been jealous, they are sitting back (all six of the small ones) trying to steal some photo time as well.     They are all going to the "barn" tomorrow.     Sawnuts from the plywoodie worked nicely on the walnut handled backsaw i'm working on113.gif.     Get that done, might be time to move on to "bigger" things?Grin.gif

D8 is missing TWO sawnuts.47.gif    Two flat head bolts are in there now. 26.gif    Trying to find out IF I have a chunk of wood that will match the thumbhole's wood.   Frown.gif

Cleaning off all the rust, and splatters of paint (Painters use saws?) on the Thumbhole D8....WE HAVE ETCH!Grin.gifGrin.gifGrin.gif

Henry Disston even SIGNED a two line script beside the BIG keystone etch.      There is a stamped number down by the handle as well:  "5-1/2"     might be the ppi?

Working my way through the sandpaper grits.  Clean the rusty dust off, wipe down with the Citrius Mold Cleaner from work, and start again.    IF I can get that brass medallion off the handle, I can get the handle off the blade for a repair job.

Not sure about the age of this old guy.....Teeth are still sharp, and well set.   A big skew back rip saw for the shop ( and NOT for FleabayTongue.gif, either)
