MISTER DISSTON"S D8

Featured Replies

The etch was signed by Henry Disston on the saw blade of my "new" $2 saw.     Big "Keystone" etch as well.     Blade has been cleaned and shined up.   Sawnuts cleaned up.  There was a small matter of a broken handle , though. ning-rustysaws002-32416-9.jpg?width=750Not a big deal.   I had another broken handle on site,   a backsaw handle, but it did match where I needed to match.     Planed the D8's break nice and flat (er) and marked the replacement part for a cut.   Clamped the two parts together:ning-woodshop001-32416-1.jpg?width=750allowed to set up for an hour or so.     I got the router table almost cleared off (HORRORS)  as i needed to run a round-over bit on a backsaw handle.    The New craftsman isn't set up in there yet, so the "old" GMC one was changed out to 1/4' collet.    Set the depth, and rounded the handle overning-woodshop002-32416-22.jpg?width=750needs a lot of sanding, don't it?    Anyway, this and one other project was enough to kill so time.     Now it is time to shape the "New" Disston Thumbhole handle.  ning-woodshop003-32416-40.jpg?width=750 This is also the spot where it says " 5  1/2"   as in teeth.  BIG teeth.    This is a skew back, thumbhole D8 RIP saw.   I'll strip the old part of the handle, and apply a new finish, maybe this weekend...

Used a "donor saw" for parts.   Now, i have a saw blade, rusty< and a trashed handle.     I'll clean up the blade, might be worth the effort, and MIGHT make a new handle, out of REAL WOOD!.     Then, I'm back to the problem of sawnuts...

Still looking to strip the old finish off this big guy, and stain and finish the handle as one piece.   Them teeth ARE SHARP!  Just barely hit them with a finger, and got three holes in the finger.   Found a couple good, unused, sawfiles in the old toolbox.  Six inch slims!     Need to rig up a saw vise, and sharpen those big teeth right up.    Blade is nice and straight.     Handle style is from the forties, since the medallion says "USA" on it.     Another "User Tool" for the shop....

A little more "Eye candy", got to love this old saws.ning-sawworksii005-32419-20.jpg?width=72a little better view of the repaired handle.    Good thing i recycle wood stuff?     Repair piece was from that broken backsaw handle.    At least i had the BOTTOM part of THAT handle to use for parts.     Plate is cleaning up nicely, as well.    A bigger view, maybe?ning-sawworksii006-32419-3.jpg?width=721as for the "donor saw"?     I'm currently cleaning the plate up on that saw as well.    The number stamped under the handles stands for ppi, as in 5.5 teeth points per inch on the D8, or 8 ppi on the donor saw.    handle was a plywoodie, and wound up in the trash can.    Seems I do have a "pattern',  a Thumbhole one at that...Grin.gif

There is an etch just starting to show up on the donor saw.    The nickel plated medallion that was on the plywood handle said "WARRENTED"  and SUPERIOR around an Eagle.     An 8 point crosscut saw,  might be worth the effort.    These two saws cost me a whole Princely sum of $4, and an eight block (one way) trip on foot.  Might have to make another such trip, hunting for $2 sawnuts.....Grin.gif

Steve, that is a really cool sway back saw man! I love those! Can you get a close up of that Disston engraving?

still cleaning up.   Need to get some "Gun Blue' to darken the etch (BOTH of them).     Bummed out, right now, lost a bid on a stanley #5,  with a fixable tote( I MAKE totes, nowadays) Every bid i put in is topped by another.    not going the way i want.   I'll try again, in a week or so.    On the "list', Stanley #5, Stanley #5-1/2c, and a stanley 5-1/4 ( smooth or a "c").

That donor saw might get athumbhole handle made for it, later this year.    Donor saw also has "Etch".   It has 8 ppi, so it would be a crosscut.   might  be just  the pair for the shop....Grin.gif
