I can't believe this weather we are having. Already getting into the 80's here. Looks like I will be spending a little time this weekend on the John Deere going over the yard. Hard to believe it is grass cutting time again. Maple trees are already forming the little helicopters, Bradford Pears have already lost most of their blooms. We may miss spring altogether and go straight into summer. WOW!

So last night I got into the shop for a bit to work on the cedar chest for a customer. This is one I am replacing the bottom skirt which was broken. So I got the old pieces off and decided that there was no way I was going to be able to put the new ones on and make this finish match, so I got some DNA and removed the shellac finish that had been applied.

ning-imag0062-32386-35.jpgSo as you can see by the time I got the old skirt off and sanded it got into the sides. But I have two of the sides sanded to fresh wood.

ning-imag0061-32386-48.jpgAll I like are the ends and the top and it will be ready for new finish.

ning-imag0058-32386-13.jpgI got started taking the shellac off the top so it will be ready to sand.

I have the blanks cut for the new skirt and as soon as I test fit them, I will use the pattern I made of the old one and make the cut out and apply.

So yard cutting, Cedar Chest work and I have a little tile work to hopefully finish up in a downstairs bathroom this weekend if all goes well. Whew, what a weekend agenda.

So how about all of you, what are you plans this weekend? Are you working in the shop, on the shop, Home Improvement, HDL, or just planning a nice weekend of golf and relaxing? You know we always want to know what you are working on so please post some pictures of your projects whatever they might be this weekend.

Above all, have a safe and fun weekend, we want to see your smiling Avatar on here everyday!

Here in So. Calif. we are supposed to be getting some rain over the weekend. Good thing that I got my lawn mowed and trees trimmed last week and hauled off to the dump. I got my taxes done this week with the exception of one thing I need for my daughter's taxes and then I can send everything in so we can get our refund and a new computer :-)

I got an email from a client back in NYC that I made a number of cutting boards for awhile back. He wants me to make another batch up as a house warming gift for a friend, so I will be starting the process today. A nice easy job that will net some actual profit to go towards a new tool as opposed to paying for something frivolous like utilities. The In-Laws were supposed to be coming out for the weekend, but with the  rain coming in and them having to drive through the mountains to get here and then back home, they decided to wait until next month. My son is also going to bring his car over so I can put new front brakes on it as he is not mechanical at all. Growing up I tried to teach him, but every tool or flashlight I put in his hands turned into a "Light Saber" so I do the work and he buys us dinner. Win-win all around.

A valve on our irrigation system froze and busted during our last hard freeze. My fault. Forgot to shut off the supply and drain it. In changing the valve, I twisted off the PVC connection under ground. Will be digging that up and repairing it.

Then, it's on to glue ups for some more band saw boxes. One for a local friend and two more destined for Okinawa. While the glue dries, I MUST clean the shop.

I just keep hammering away.

Since the medical department of our house (my wife) got rather disturbed at me the other day when I broke open my wound from two weeks ago, I'll not be in the shop.  In fact, I'll probably stay out of the shop until we return from Alabama. Frown.gif

Applying the finish to the curved top box. I'm dealing with blotching. I found an article in wood magazine that recommends after application of the dye, allow to dry completely, then wet sand with 150 then 220 using boiled linseed oil to create a slurry then once the grain is completely covered and even wipe off excess with mineral spirits and allow to dry for 24 to 48 hours before applying topcoat. My question is after the finish is dried can I spray it with gloss lacquer or will the lacquer react with the BLO?

Mike, I think on a small project I did some time back I put BLO and then sprayed with lacquer. You might want to test it on a scrap piece. I don't want to 100% that is was okay but I don't remember any problems.

Mike,

I've done it. But it was a week or so between the BLO and the lacquer.

working tomorrow and maybe a little on sunday finishing some drywall in a bath remodel im doing.  Tonight worked on making a tempory greenhouse on the south side of my shop, cant wait to get it done and put some starter seeds in.  maybe get some shop time in otherwise ( i usually find some time), ps been in the 60's all week and into the next.

Mow the back yard.  Replace an old tarp on the fishing boat. Replace the T & P valve on the water heater.  Replace those retainer clips on my son door panel.  That panel was just hanging by the wires.  Finally finished the out -feed cabinet for the table saw.  Put the second coat of polyethylene on it and then started putting things in the drawers .  Whew I'm tired.

Got more done yesterday than I had figured. Not as much as Wayne, though.

Still gotta dig up the pipes and clean the shop. Two lovely jobs that I keep putting off so I can reward myself for doing all that detestable woodworking.Grin.gif

Well I have several distractions in this past weekend, all of which were good, but I didn't get as much done as I have planned. I guess that is what keeps us going. No work on the cedar chest this weekend. I did get the tile up in the bathroom and ready to lay the new tile. I got the pieces cut, so I should go down pretty quick now.

Mid 80's here this weekend. I got a little red around the neck doing a little yard work. It is amazing how fast the yard is greening up this year. Oh well, better get a pair of new sharp blades, looks like I am going to need them this year.

I had a customer stop by the shop on Saturday. I will be making a couple of shadow boxes for some gloves that were his dad's. An old catches mitt.

ning-20120317-111312-827-32388-37.jpg?wiand a fielding glove.

ning-20120317-111323-96-32388-34.jpg?widSo these are now on the list of projects to get out of the shop.

So all in all I have a good weekend, Hope about you, did you get the projects done you were working on?

Give us an update.

Those are cool old ball gloves.  I can't wait to see them.  I rested all weekend trying to heal up.
