March 17, 201214 yr Hey everyone!! I've managed to clean up the shop, made a challenge coin holder for my son, have some ideas for a different challenge coin holder for my veteran daughter, and stocked up on some supplies. In the next few weeks I hope to receive two flags that have flown over the US Capital from Senator McCain's office with the idea of presenting them to my son and daughter. Want to build some flag cases and looking for inspiration for design and any tips or hints you might have. Any hints or tips would be appreciated!!!!!!
March 17, 201214 yr Hi Paul, I'm not on the forum much.. but seen this post and would be honored to assist you in building your flag cases. You will first need to find out the size of the Flags you are having flown? most times these are 4X6 in size, but some are also just standard 3X5. I can send you the measurements for both sizes. I've been building these and my displays since 1996 and once the military medically retired me out.. I took my hobby to a business full time in 2004. I cannot post up any photo's as my desktop computer crashed the other day. but you can locate my page on facebook under Flag Cases By Walls or visit my website at www.showaflag.comonce I get my desktop computer back monday or tuesday I can add some photo's here. Thanks Out to You and Your Children for their Service to Our Nation! Russ
March 17, 201214 yr Paul, I make case and sell them regularly and I use an adaptation of the plan attached. Instead of the two short feet I put a solid base on the case with countersunk screws and then I plug the holes and put felt pads on them. As you can see by the picture I don't spline the ends and I use turn buttons on the back. The measurements are very good on this design. Hope this helps. Looks like I'll have to send you the PDF but here's the pictures.   Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
March 17, 201214 yr Here is an example of the type I've made. This one has a dado cut to hold the glass and the back is fastened with small brads. Later ones had a rabbet and molding to hold the glass to facilitate glass replacement. Also replaced the brads, on the back, with little "turn holders". As you can see, it is nothing fancy but does the job. Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!
