March 18, 201214 yr I made a birds mouth plane stop out of scrap today. Just wanted to try it out and first impressions are good.Good, Better, Best never let it restTill your Good is Better and your Better is Best.

March 19, 201214 yr Very nice. I have a similar stop although it is not dovetailed. I use it everyday and seeing yours makes me want to upgrade. Also, looks like you have a shoulder vise. Is your bench homemade? I would love to see some pics.Adam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine Woodworking
March 19, 201214 yr Author Adam I have a shop photo album on here that has some bench shots. My bench is homemade I loosely followed a plan from a woodsmith magazine and a few ideas from a Workbench book.Good, Better, Best never let it restTill your Good is Better and your Better is Best.
March 19, 201214 yr Great job Mark. That is a definite project on my todo list. I was watching Roy Underhill over the weekend and he made some Bench Hooks, I need those too. I also need a real bench!!!!When I first saw your birdmouth, I was thinking that grain is going to split when you drive the piece in. But if you had made it so the grain was parallel to the work being inserted, it surely would split. How much pressure do you use to set the work piece, or do you just set it in and let dynamics take care of the rest?John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
March 19, 201214 yr Author John I just slide it in and add a little pressure with the wedge. the planeing action may tighten it up. I have seen examples with a couple dowels to add some strength that makes me think it can or has split on the maker. I like my bench hook I made; nice to be able to saw at the bench without risk of cutting the bench.Good, Better, Best never let it restTill your Good is Better and your Better is Best.
March 19, 201214 yr John. Build that bench! A good bench will change the way you work. John Morris said:Great job Mark. That is a definite project on my todo list. March 20, 201214 yr Adam, you don't how bad I have been wanting to build my bench for a couple years now. Since working more closely with hand tools, my bench I have now is not sufficient to use with my current style of work. I need to slow down just a tad and get a bench built! Thanks for the encouragement Adam.Adam Welker said:John. Build that bench! A good bench will change the way you work. March 20, 201214 yr Very nice. I always love to see a bench in the center of a shop instead of a tablesaw. What is it made of? Adam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine Woodworking
March 20, 201214 yr Author Made it out of Borg wood. Spent a couple hours sorting through the 2 x 4 and 2 x 6s. spent three day going from store to store picked one then picked through there select lumber. I consider this my starter bench. So far after a couple years the only thing I would change beside wood type is adding a second dog hole in the shoulder vice.Good, Better, Best never let it restTill your Good is Better and your Better is Best.
March 20, 201214 yr Right on! I make most of mine from good old Southern Yellow Pine and I love the stuff. It seems to get harder as it gets older. It is cheap and is what is found in every home center here in VA. I would love to have a nice maple or ash bench, but that stuff is uber expensive here. Maybe one day... For a starter bench, I'd say you did a fine job. I wish that I had incorporated a wagon vise in my most recent bench like you have on yours. There's always next time.Adam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine Woodworking
