Saw Handle: the finale

Featured Replies

Ok, a little eye candy coming up:ning-sdc12276-31907-64.jpg?width=750I went downtown and picked up a couple rusties  Friday.      A rather princely sum of $5, mind you.    One saw produced the three sawnuts needed to complete this saw.      That donor saw is now an Orphan.    handle is a little rough, and the blade has no markings at all on it.  A look at the orphan handle:ning-sdc12278-31907-94.jpg?width=750Ain't he cute?Grin.gif  Not sure I like the wheat carving on it.    It only had the three sawnuts on it, all else was MIA.    As for the second saw in the group buy?     Anyone hear of a Rancher brand, by Disston?ning-sdc12277-31907-33.jpg?width=750I'll clean this one up, sharpen the teeth, and put it back to work.   Might run the router around, just to soften the edges a might.     Handle is solid wood though.     It might be a "relative" of that "Townsman" saw i have:ning-townsmansaw003-31907-34.jpg?width=7Same style Medallion as the Rancher.    Gotta do SOMETHING about that colour, though.  Grin.gif

The "orphan saw is a late model D-23 about late 40s-early 50s.      I'll dig up some nickel plated hardware for it, re-finish the handle, and see what happens.   looks like either an 11 or 12 point crosscut saw.   I've already run the round-over bit around all the edges.     A bit of sanding to do, then some varnish, since these used a "weather-proof"  (yeah, right) finish.     Looks like another walk downtown this friday....Grin.gif

Nice Score on the saws. I have a few I will show off in the next couple of weeks when they come home from the saw wright. I am just now learning to restore saws, they intimidate me and it is odd i used to use them all the time but grandpa never taught me how to sharpen and set them, let alone jointing them. I think I can restore them as well as I can a hand plane but I never have done one till now. our ancestors  didn't have to restore old tools to use them they could just buy good tools you cant go to the hardware store and buy Lie Nielsen or Bad Axe you have to buy online and wait for days or weeks to get what you want.
