The Orphan Saw

Featured Replies

Ok, one more project saw to do.    This saw gave up it's last three saw bolts so the 8 point saw could be finished up.     Now i need to clean things up, work on the handle a bit, and maybe find  FOUR sawnuts, AND a medallion.     Saw blade is at least an 8-9 pointer, maybe more.    It does have a curve to it where it meets the handle:ning-sdc12279-31886-26.jpg?width=750a "Five holer".   Big old curve.   No markings, whatsoever, on the blade ( other than my fat finger tips) never sen that before.      Atkins, or someone else, make this one????   As for the handle itself,ning-sdc12280-31886-33.jpg?width=750Strange wheat patterns..one goes "up', the other goes"down"????    Going to be nice when cleaned up, though.    A little chip-out near one hole.    Might round-over things a bit, since the handle is loose.  Now about them sawnuts........anyone have some they would part with?????Grin.gif

Finally traced down WHAT this saw is:    A very late, early 50s , D23.    Handle will get a re-finish,  I'll find some bolts, and it is off to fleebay to sell.      Last inventory showed EIGHT large handsaws!  Grin.gif   Time to thin the "Herd' a bit.     The two HK Porter saws and this one will go.    POWRKRAFT  one will, maybe, stay.    The D8 however, ain't going nowhere!   The new handled "Donor Saw' will also stay in the shop.    But at least i'm getting a little closer to "Done".  Grin.gif

Set up the "saw vise' yesterday, and sharpened the blade of this saw.      Looking like a 12 pointer, to me.    That is a LOT of teeth to file.     Just set the file to do a rip style, as in straight across.     Reached the end of the saw blade about half an hour after I started.    I used a 7" extra slim taper file.

Brought home a couple Green Scratchy  pads from work.     Went to work clean the rest of the rust off the blade.    There is/was an etch on there.    LOTS of squiggles/circles like things.     Can't quite make them out.26.gif    I do have a bottle of "Gun Blue" in the "shop" ( back porch) but it tends to just blue everything.    Looking for the "right" way to use that stuff.

Handle got a coat of Ipswich Pine stain this morning.   Looking just like a Disston style handle, againGrin.gif.     I'll poly it up later today, to add a bit of shine.     Payday is tomorrow, so a trip down the sidewalks will get me some more saws (@ $2 per saw) and a supply of saw nuts, and maybe a medallion or two.   Now,  Nickel plated, or,   Brass?????106.gif

Finish is on.   I used a drywall screw to temp. hold things together while the finish dries.  Blade is nice and clean/shiny/sharp.  Even the teeth are sharpGrin.gif.    A look at this saw.....ning-sdc12315-31887-45.jpg?width=721I also gave that Disston "Rancher" saw a re-fresh of it's varnish, as it was looking a little "haggard".     Know of a better use of a porch rail than to dry parts in the sunshine?    Oh yeah, foot rest after a looooong day on my feet.....Grin.gif
