Scroll Saw Ribbon Box

Featured Replies

This project is from a book I bought a few months ago The Best of Scroll Saw Magazine Creating Wooden Boxes Published by Fox Chapel Publishing.

The body is cut from a solid block of Walnut, the bottom & lid is Maple. The flat & wavy ribbons are laminated from Purple heart & Cherry then cut out on the scroll saw. The ribbon bows are laminated Cherry, Purple heart & maple then cut on the scroll saw. Finished with Danish Oil.

Mike, that's an awesome looking box. I've seen this pattern before, how hard were the ribbons to cut?

Thank you Greg! Not too bad. The toughest part was final fitting of the bows on the top. I sanded and filed with diamond needle files until I had reasonably tight joints at the top, then used a dab of hot melt glue to hold them in place then I used 5 minute epoxy for the final bond and then applied the finish.

Mike' I have done a few of these. They are a pleasure to cut, but a bigger pleasure to see the smile and eyes when given. Great job Mike, looks like your growing at a rapid rate with your scroll saw. Very nice to see, and appreciate. Keep up the great work.
