April 4, 201214 yr A birdhouse! What else would it be. A few weeks ago he started this birdhouse and has been working on it on and off since. I left him at it. He used his small saw from a toy set, and a bottle of glue and I helped him guide the saw a little or get started on the cut. He learned how to lay out the center of a board with the intersecting line method as seen at the front of his home. I drilled out the door on my DP for him. But he did the rest. He learned to use a square to draw a line for cutting. He learned to measure and he learned patience. Sometimes it would take him about 5 to 10 minutes just to cut one piece with his hand saw because it kept grabbing on him. He finally is getting it, long smooth strokes, don't lean into it, and let the saw do the work, took almost the entire project to learn that! But he got it! The home is all his design, I had zero input in the build, only to provide him with a workspace and answers when he asked. While I work on my work, he was 10 feet away working on his, some nice moments and discussions took place during this project of his. Here is Jeroid, holding his first woodworking project He even glued up some advertising billboards to lure the birds to their new home. "Welcome To Birdhouse" And the next billboard lets the birds know that they are supposed to say Tweet Tweet when they are on the premises He started off with a very small very coarse hand saw from a toy box to cut his boards, I let him struggle with that saw for sometime, you should have seen his face when I handed him my Disston swayback for him to use, he felt like he graduated to a higher degree, it was priceless. April 6, 201214 yr Always a great thing to pass down woodworking from one generation to another. My son passes it up for other tings. My hope is that one of my grand kids grow an interest.
