Don't quite know why it was

Featured Replies

but I got distracted some time before the cold weather hit and when I went back to it I sort of lose track of where I was and had the devil of a time getting my head back  into a project.

It's a series of boxes.  I made one. It was for a 6 year old girl.  Her mother and my missus took one look at it and insisted that I have two of them  one for each little girl or it was no go. They were concerned that the one who didn't get one would feel badly.

A foolish notion because  it's a certainty that I'll  make yet another something  for the other little granddaughter.  But I'd already perfected this design and already figured out how to do all the hard bits. So I was essentially good with the idea..  But then I figured if I was going to make one why not make one for each of the wimminfolks.  Which meant four more identical boxes.

The first of these boxes was intended as a spoof around the routine the little girt and I have going.  I go on about the elephants. Pink elephants, flying elephants, magical elephants,  little small blue ones under the chairs,  there's elephants everywhere.   And of course the little girl eventually gets her fill of it and says "Stop it Popi"  She has a cute inflection when she says it.  It encourages me to go on about yet still more elephants.

So the box was designed around  this as my signature.  The elephant. That and the fact that I adore my grand daughters.

Here are some finished box pics

Note the diminutive little bubbly heart knobs

Inside however it's an orgasm of hearts

The heart cut outs are intended to be the handles.  They allow a finger to penetrate the drawer and remove completely from the case - one handed - allowing a firm grasp on the drawer.

The drawers are sequentially numbered on the back so they can always go back where they should

And because of the elephant I wanted something.

I wanted that when I'm lone gone and she's all grown she'll open up drawer number 7  and get more than a little misty thinking of me.

Yup that's right my signature is in there for keeps.

Popi put an elephant in her box.

More  pix of here

Anyways I'm making more and  I got stalled and for whatever reason  making the heart knobs seemed like such a hurdle.

I finally got 'em done. They ain't  finish  sanded  nor mounted yet, but I got 'em cut out

Dunno why this was such a challenge.  It's not like I hadn't done it before but for whatever reason I was dragging my feet big time.

So long and short I'm hanging onto the first one till the others are done

The wood is  Siberian Elm I harvested on my property.

I gotta get this project done.

WOW! Very impressive Cliff. Some very nice joinery and I love the finish!

Cliff that/those are so awesome and the story to go with it is great. I have three very special granddaughters and will have to do something similar for them. I love the design and the hearts are so unique. The special touch in drawer #7 will be a strong reminder of you.

Thanks for sharing and thanks for sharing the story behind the project. It always makes them special.

Great project and great workmanship. I WILL NOT show this to my wife, because I KNOW she will want one for our granddaughter too. Not gonna happenGrin.gif

Incredible work! Thanks for sharing.

Saying it is gorgeous does not begin to do this justice!

I would be interested in seeing how you held the heart shaped knobs during the routing and flattening process.

Thanks for posting this, Cliff!

thanks guys.

Cliff,

From the story, the hearts, the joinery, to the lumber being harvested from your land, and curved feet, to the hidden elephant. What a great piece, loved every bit of it.

thanks for sharing.

No greater Loves than God, Family, Friends, country, the sight of flying chips and the smell of saw dust.

Cliff the views you got on this post say a thousand words my friend. This is a beautiful piece of art, unique, special, and it will be around for a hundred plus years with joinery like that. Great job Cliff, did you upload these pics in your Album??

They are coming along. I got all but one finished. Not finished as in done, Finished as in just got the finish on.
Got drawer bottoms backs and elephants to make and the latch mortise and keyway to do

Somebody here got me addicted the GF sanding sealer. Stuff works~!! Gotta put it on heavy if you want just the one application. Two doesn't hurt it's just ya gotta do it twice.

CLiff, pics please! I absolutely love this piece. Plans? Your brain? Where'd it come from? I want to make one or two. But one would need some serious patience, of which I am lacking at times. Keep the updates coming sir!113.gif

Mostly  John, this is  just one of those projects that came about from free association.

What drawings I did were all about trying to get  individual elements to fit.

So the follow up boxes are  just that.  When I lost time over the winter, I almost lost my way.
