I give you the TREBUCHET

Featured Replies

I constructed this from plans found in Wood magazine May 2011. I made a few changes. Instead of just a drilled hole in the arm pivot I used bushings which gives the brass shaft a bearing surface which cuts down on friction and allows for further distance when launching the peanut. I also waxed the bed to reduce friction after finishing the assembly with Danish Oil. Instead of knots I used loops in the string that is seized with rod building thread which make for a cleaner look. I can launch a peanut in the shell approx 20 - 25 feet.

Thanks for viewing!

I should have one of these on my desk when I taught school!

That is so cool.

I can see some kids getting in trouble with that! We were way to competitive to have had one of those as kids. We got in enough trouble with china berries and flips.

In my state those things are banned  the same as kiddie porn. Mere possession is the crime. You can't get a license for them.

I've never seen any one charged and I've even seen school children building them in  my state, but  they are banned outright because my state has banned slingshots and arguably that is a sling shot.

My brother and I found the recipe for black powder so we started out on the extreme side. We thought it would be cool to blow up fire ant beds so towards that end bigger must be better. We also discovered how deep the water main was that ran through our front yard. At about the same time we discovered what it's like to be deaf for a period of time and also just how high water can shoot when forced out of a ruptured pipe. Not long after we were re acquainted with the sound of leather clearing belt loops, I tell you that sound and the sound of the slide mechanism on a twelve gauge shot gun while standing in a pumpkin patch will make you freeze dead in your tracks and will remain with me for the rest of my life. They should make an alarm clock sound like those sounds.

Kids today don't know what their missing. When we were kids you got a butt woopin and learned what respect was when you messed up. Now days you get time out, and from the looks of some of these kids a knock out would've served them much better!

Could not agree more, Mike. In fact, I believe the majority of the ADD "sufferers" could have been cured early on with the judicious application of pine or leather to a butt cheek.

When I was little there was something about cars shing shots and BB guns. They seemed so perfect together.

It's like a cat chasing a floaty thing.  Kids see a car they have something to shoot at 'em with and  - - well there ya go.

I can just  imagine what I'd have done with a trebuchet that could hurl a 50 pound stone.

Kewl video - leave it up to the kids AND a teacher that can grasp the concept of learning WITH his kids.  Doesn't happen very often anymore.

Mike, how will it shoot AND how much weight.  Using Brussel Sprouts, Strawberries, etc?????

When I first saw those plans I was thinking I need to build a few for the grandkids.....maybe I'll get to it in a few weeks. May incorporate your improvements as well (if you don't mind).

Borrow away Fred. If I can help let me know!

Mike I have to agree 100%.

You might be on to something with the alarm sound. Maybe even a ringtone, now that would get your attention in a crowd!
