April 20, 201214 yr Is it just me or does this year seem to be flying by faster than usual? Three and a half months and it seems like it was just Christmas a few weeks ago. Hope warmer weather is bringing you a chance to work on some of your favorite woodworking projects. This time of year brings about the craft show season and they are starting to get into full swing. I have had one First Friday show and will have those until December. I have an outdoor show tomorrow, but the weather is looking like a rain out right now. Wood items and rain just don't do well even under a tent. So I may be passing on that one tomorrow. I have another one the next Saturday and then a large two day show the middle of May I am trying to get ready for. This is a juried show and the first time I have been accepted. I am looking forward to the event. It will outside in one of the larger parks in our area. Always brings out a lot of people. So I have been working on cutting boards and all of the items I display on my table. Last night I finished sanding three more boards and will get several more glued up this weekend. I will also be making a run to one of my suppliers this weekend to pick up about 500 bf of cedar. Looks to be a busy and full weekend. Got to find some time to get on the John Deere and get some grass cut also. So what are your plans for the weekend? You got a special project you can give us an update on, pictures are good, so we can see what you are making. Any of you doing craft show in the near future, tell us about it. What's on the HDL? Anyone planning on just get some rest or relaxation? Got any good shop projects you would like to share with the rest of us? You know, inquiring minds want to know what you are working on? April 20, 201214 yr Since I finally finished up the poster frames for my daughter, I have started on making the prototypes of some adirondack chairs. As I was chewing on what I could build that I could actually sell and generate some income from to support my woodworking habit as well as something that was usable at our home, I noticed my adirondack bench that I made about 12-13 years ago and still sets on my front porch. I made a number of them years ago and sold some and made a little bit of money that went back into the shop. So I started to look around to find something that was a bit more unique with better construction. So I came across a site by a guy named Tim Celeski. He deals a lot with the Arts & Crafts crowd dealing in high end mahogany outdoor furniture and I really like the adirondack style chairs that he was making. The chairs are all based on the same general design and joinery for the frame, but he has done some changes to the shape of the arms and back to fit different styles from traditional to contemporary to A&C. While I was at my local Woodcraft store, I was looking through their books and came across one with a photo on the front that was the exact same as Tim Celeski's! It is called "Great Book of Woodworking Projects by American Woodworker"Â So I got the book and am in the process now of doing a prototype out of Poplar as well as making templates. I got about another week (unless something gets in the way) to get this one finished up. April 21, 201214 yr I am still trying to shake off the work week. Â I feel fortunate to have survived it. Â Â I need to finish the stand for the fish plague and many other projects I have on the drawing board. Â I promised Rhonda from work I would make up another business card holder of their 1952 Chevy truck and now she has talked me into another personalized box. Â Anyone who has been here for awhile knows I am not keen on personalized projects. I put those customers off or turn them down, and then they hound me until I cave in and agree to make the item. Â I swear on a stack of walnut this is going to be the last two personalized items I make for her. Â I confess, I'm a selfish little woodworker who wants to dive into projects I really want to make. Â Â Is that so unreasonable??? Â SQ Happiness is wood chips flying!
April 21, 201214 yr I know the feeling about wanting to make projects that you really want to do, I've got several, just need to find more time SQ said: I am still trying to shake off the work week.  I feel fortunate to have survived it.   I need to finish the stand for the fish plague and many other projects I have on the drawing board.  I promised Rhonda from work I would make up another business card holder of their 1952 Chevy truck and now she has talked me into another personalized box.  Anyone who has been here for awhile knows I am not keen on personalized projects. April 21, 201214 yr I've got several things in the works, and have been trying to get some more items ready for the upcoming farmers markets, next Sat.. That is if they accept me, I applied to be a vendor this week, and they have a panel that judges your items and deems them worthy to sell, I should hear something by mid week. They require a 17 event committment, which has to be paid for up front, but it's only $5 per market. They did this because they had too many no show vendors. GregScroll Saw forum hosthttp://www.thesawdustfactoryga.com/

April 22, 201214 yr Author Right there with you SQ. I have been trying to get a dining table build for my wife for about three years now. All of the paying projects keep jumping in front of the project for here. I have some walnut drying right now to do the table with and I am going to do my best to get it done this summer. But don't hold me to it.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
April 22, 201214 yr Author No shop time for me so far this weekend, but I did manage to make it up to the mill and pick up 250 BF of cedar today. Got it stored away with other hordes of lumber. When I talked to the mill they thought they were going to have 500 bf but when I got there it had only netted out to 250 bf. Oh will I will just make another run later when they cut some more.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com

April 22, 201214 yr What woodworking! Not this week-end at least till I get back home from Orlando FL. late Thursday.  Some how I got drag into this one from my wife. She has conference she attending to and wanted me to come and sort of make it as a vacation. It not too bad. Saw part of NASA last Friday on tour bus but was little disappointed in some ways. Part of NASA was off limit due to being classified and tourist were not allowed. Right now wife at conference and I'm looking to see what to do so I thought just check in here. No pictures on the hotel computers. Have to wait till get back home. Went to one STATE PARK Saturday hoping to see the Mantee ( hope I spell that right) and was told due to unusally warm March they left early. But did see alligators. Lazy looking thing. Think I'm going to try finding a good book store and catch up on some reading. Something on woodworking. I'm getting bored  Wayne E     Wayne E
April 23, 201214 yr Author Wow Wayne sorry to hear you are bored. I usually Google and find a WoodCraft store anywhere close and go walk around it while my wife is attending conference. I also hit the books stores and load up on woodworking Magazines that I don't subscribe to for reading material. Hope the weekend trip gets better. Wayne Ellington said: What woodworking! April 23, 201214 yr Author Good that you got to at least to a little practicing. Sometimes that is what we do just to learn how to use a skill later on. Find a piece of wood that is not critical and give it a try. I used to keep some cut off of pine 2x4's around and rip them down to 2x2's and use them for practice pieces. I am sure you will work it out and have a new item to add to the project list. Charles Nicholls said: i watched a video last evening of one of my favorite woodturner's that goes by the name of Capn Eddie Castellin that showed how to make a case for sewing needles. Since i dont have a lot of time to be up and this project goes fairly fast ( according to Eddie) i decided to give it a try since its a skill exercise too. His turned out great of course, but my first attempt was less than stellar. It requires taking a standard 7/8" - 1" pen blank, Wood or acrylic. Mark a 1" long piece of the wood, and drill a 3/8 hole in it about 1/2" deep, turn it round and part it off at the 1" mark Drill a 7mm hole on the longer blank about 3 3 1/2" deep, long enough to hold the longest sewing needle you plan to keep in it. Turn that round then part it off leaving an extra 1/4" beyond the hole depth. If you do not have a 4 jaw chuck do NOT turn it round until you turn a 1/2" long tenon 3/8" diam. on the same end you put the 7mm hole through. this is what your cap you made previously will mount to. Put the cap on and turn carefully whatever design you like being careful not to turn it too thin. and finish the same as a pen. My biggest problem was turning the tenon and getting it straight I also had a problem with it getting turned slightly out of round. Have no idea why, but the hole for the needles to go in wasn't turned straight so it got out of round. I obviously need to practice making tenons too. This is a random piece of cherry. The image here didn't turn out very well but you can clearly see that the holder has a cap and that I definitely need to practice tenons. April 24, 201214 yr Charles I thought of that. My problem is I like to eat what I catch which I think it would be rather difficult to do any cooking at this motel/ hotel we are staying. Don't think they would like  me setting off the fire alarm.  Wayne E  Charles Nicholls said: I would say get you like a 3 day fishing license and a pole and go fishing when you get bored
April 24, 201214 yr John  Found Woodcraft Monday morning about 35 to 40 miles from the motel/hotel we staying at. Yea I did check the store out. Think I'm fallin in love with the Sand Flee.  Been wanting a wide belt /drum sander but never did like the price tag and not liking  the problems I keep reading in adjusting them. Thinking the Sand Flee would do just fine but will have to hold off getting it till later this year. One to make room for it and two to save my pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters for it.   Also did fine that there is Bass Pro Outdoot World right here in Orlando. I'll be heading there shortly. I can get lost in there real easy.  Tomorrow wife be done with the conference about noon and we will be heading to Kissimmee FL for air boatride. That may be interesting. Hopefully get to see the wildlife in more or their natural enviroment. Then Thrusday morning have 0730 flight to home. Gee that means getting up at 0430 and to drive an hour to get to the air port.  Wayne E John Moody said: Wow Wayne sorry to hear you are bored.
