April 23, 201214 yr I need another jointer in the shop like I need a hole in my head but when my friend Andy sent me a link to a local classified ad I had to go check it out. It's tiny for a 6 inch jointer, I had 4 inch jointers bigger than this one, but it weighs 200 lbs. It's in fairly descent shape and mostly complete sans the blade guard. Oliver Machinery Co. is one of my favorite manufactures and I had to have it so I offered the seller 50 bucks for it and he accepted. Direct drive 110 v 1/3 hp motor Badge After a little cleaning and a coke can for scale Should be a fun restoration project but it's gonna have to sit in the rathole until I have time to work on it, which should give me a chance to find a 6 inch cutter head to replace the clamshell head and maybe get lucky and find a blade guard.
April 23, 201214 yr Shane,Nice looking project, I'm sure you'll enjoy doing this one.A little smaller than your past few projects! Larry
April 23, 201214 yr That is an awesome joiner Shane. Great lines and nice style. What is a clam shell cutter head? And, have you fired it up to hear how that direct drive sounds? Just curious.John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
April 23, 201214 yr Awesome Shane. Just wondering if a good cleaning might not be the best for this one. Leave her aunatural. My job is to give my kids things to discuss with their therapist

April 24, 201214 yr YOU KNOW THE RULE~!!!No pix ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~I have never seen an old iron Oliver jointer that you couldn't park an aircraft carrier on with room to turn it around.I'd like to see this one.
April 25, 201214 yr Author Thanks for the comment everyone.Larry, yes it will be nice to restore something small again. I think the last 3 machines I have done have totaled over 8,000 lbs.John, This article can explain to ya what a clamshell head is a lot better than I can. In my opinion they are as dangerous to use as a square head is. I don't have a problem running a planer with either, but don't feel safe running a jointer with one.Yes I have turned it on and ran it for a few minutes. Bearings sound okay but they are dry. They will get replaced when I restore it.Ken I thought about just cleaning it up and leaving it as is, but there's a lot of chips in the paint, looks like it got knocked around a little. I don't think I will completely strip it down, just sand the good paint, fill in the chips and repaint.Chris, are the pic not showing up for ya? If not, you can view them here on my website.
April 25, 201214 yr Good looking project Shane. Since Dan Mangile is "Mr Oliver" will you be able to keep it out of his hands?Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
April 25, 201214 yr Chris, are the pic not showing up for ya? I don't see any images in this thread if that's what you are asking. If not, you can view them here on my website. Sweet little thing. Down right adorable and it's an OLIVER~!! come on~!! Â
April 25, 201214 yr Oh look. I've been to this thread three times and the first two there were no images but now there's a pack of 'em.I can only blame the internet dwarfs.Canny little buggers. Tricksey is what they is.
April 25, 201214 yr Myself I would run that head condition depending. It is only 6" long and the clam caps are smaller but the bolts are the same size. that is if you are keeping it as a sometimes user and not for resale. I like my little 6" bursgreen I slide it over to where I need it and I converted it to 110Volt from 550 volts so I could do it(i have more 110 volt plugs around the shop). In short the little joiners made by the big boys are really just little vertion of the real thing.jackEnglish machines
May 2, 201214 yr I don't know how much diameter you have to work with, but I would try to find a planer head. That would give you enough shaft length when you turn down the extra length to the shaft diameter.
