Chip Carved WWP Challenge Coin Holder

Featured Replies

I just finished this WWP challenge coin holder and wanted to share it with all of you. It is made out of basswood (my favorite carving wood) and it has 3 coin slots to hold 9-12 challenge coins. The piece is stained Early American and finished with lacquer. Down at the bottom there is a bit of bark remaining because all old soldiers still have a little bark left on them. Darrell, you know how I feel about this as I wrote you a personal email message. But once again, great job sir!!!!! This is spectacular, and I love the originality our members are coming up for these.

In the past we have tried to stay with one design for these displays, but lately we have been getting some beautiful designs coming out, Lew, you Darrell, and folks on here like Fred are coming up with some spectacular TPW designs. I am humbled we are getting this attention, thanks guys. Your all the best.

That is really nice Darrell. It makes it very unique and you did a great job carving the Patriots!

Darrell, what tool or tools are used for chip carving?

John, I use a couple of very sharp knives. One shorter for finer cuts and another longer and flexible for larger cuts or cuts that are curved. Traditional chip carving is geometric and is explained the easiest by visualizing three cuts at the same angle down into a flat surface; where all three cuts converge on a single point. The result is a chip that comes out that looks like a pyramid. I enjoy non-traditional free-form chip carving that I use to carve images like wildflowers, animals and scenes.

Thank you so much for the compliment and honesty Wayne. I too am a veteran and it does mean a lot to my wife and I; our son is serving in the Army and we got some input from him when he returned from his latest tour.

John, Our son has 10 years in as an Army medic, he will be transferring in July to Ft. Sam Houston to teach new medics. He might end up doing 20.
