May 4, 201214 yr Was "out & about" this morning.   Went up the road ( after a stop at a Gas station) a bit, and stopped at an Antique Barn"  Closed??? Ok, on into town for a brunch, and wait on another Antique Store?Barn to open @ 10am.     Went inside, about tripped over a little handplane.  Looked it over, A Stanley #4, refurbed, @ $40!   I'll pass.   Walked on in, saw a larger plane sitting on a shelf, a Ohio #5-1/2 @ $45!  I'll pass.   Across the aisle from the jack plane, a little wooden Coffin Smoother @ $18!   Without an iron in it?  I'll pass.    Beside this little smoother , though, another little plane.  $8!  The one side is broken out.   How about $4?  Sold!   A look at this poor, broken-down plane: cleaned out some things, including about half a pound of sawdust under the adjustable throat plate, works much better now. A look at the insides:Might be worth $4???    Also, this store has a barn.   Along one aisle there are all the not so pretty handtools.   About a dozen or so handsaws, half a dozen braces, and a box of bits.   A little, folded steel ( pressed?) block plane like object, didn't bother to ask about it.   A LONG wood bodied plane, WITH iron, but a broken tote, I'll pass.    Then on another shelf, a large scraper style plane, just a bit rustyit do say stanley on the base, andand a No. 80 on the other side. Sole may need SOME work, thoughBut the blade looks goodTHAT is the Stanley "Triangle Logo" . Ok, on the way out the door of the barn, say a shiny object, amidst all that rustA saw set for a dollar bill?   Ok, "damages" including paying the State of Ohio THEIR "cut"?  $9. 58.  That scraper plane came in at $4.   Not too bad a day.... May 4, 201214 yr Author  A couple other "notes":   One flea Market was CLOSED today, they are only open on sat. and Sun.  Drat.   A second Flea market ( closer to home) has a few tools.   A sears Craftsman 16" Scrollsaw, for $60.   A Craftsman Radial Arm Saw, for $120 ( marked DOWN from $160!!)   There were a few things that LOOKED like handsaws, including a pair of Black Plastic handled ones ( @ $4 per saw)   I saw ( no puns, thank you) THREE B&D circ saws.   All metal ones at that!    On a shelf behind those plastic handled saw-wananbes, a little Block plane. About 10-20 years old, chrome cap, and NO iron in sight! $5???? I'll pass, thank you. 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'

May 5, 201214 yr Author  Got some supplies in this evening, and got after the "Re-hab" of that #80. Got some 80 grit & some 320 grit sandpaper.  Also picked up a can of 3-n-1 oil.    A couple of paint brushes for another project.    Rounded up the mikita and charged up it's two batteries, and chucked up a wire wheel.   Dug up my old 12" mill B file.    To use the 80 and 320 on the sole of this plane, i wrapped a sheet around the file, and went to town on the sole.   I had a pair of Visegrips "finger clamps" hold the body in place, so it wouldn't go flying off the back porch railing onto the ground. a look at the newly "milled" sole:still has a few pits, but I'll call this close enough.  As for that nasty body?   The Mikita & Wire Wheel went hard at it for awhile, with most of the crud landing on my hands.   hey, this IS dirty work, afterall.   alook at the body/baseI had already cleaned all the bolts, and oiled them up. That plate used to hold theblade in place was next to feel the wrapped file.  Cleaned up nicely.   Even worked over the blade, with a start on sharpening to boot. One last look at that body, before the Mask & paint guy shows up hey, we getting there.... After this project?   Seems i bought a little block plane as well.   I guess I'll just have to re-hab it as well.   A FOUR DOLLAR #80????
