The latest project

Featured Replies

Here we are, another week nearly gone, and the feeling that there is not enough time in the day is getting stronger all the time. Especially for me when i'm laid up.

I decided to take on a project that I had not done before since it seemed very simple.

The project is based on the 7mm Slimline pen, but is actually a 7mm Stylus for Ipad and many more.

Starting with a 3/4" x5" piece of wormy Buckeye burl.

You can us whatever length of 7mm tube you want. mine was actually about 3 3/4" long i had used the wrong tube, not the one that came with the kit but another that I had sitting near it that was from a 10" tube that I was planning to cut for some other Stylus, I think the actual stylus tube is 3.5" long

ning-000-0001-00-29858-87.jpg?width=750After shaping to near the actual size and shape I wanted, I realized that the eye had popped out of the wood near the clip ( the inner black spot with the brown ring).

So I looked around a minute for the missing piece and as you probably can guess it wasn't found, small things like that are impossible to find in a pile of sawdust unless you see it fly off and see where it landed. Lathe speed around this time was 2500 RPM, to try and keep the eye from being snagged (the higher your speed the less a chance of the eyes or knots getting snagged by tools, or so I am told). So who knows where it went.

Anyway, lucky for me that I had plenty of good sawdust and some medium to thin CA glue to mix it and fill the hole. You can't even tell anything was really missing.

After final sanding I put 5 coats of CA on and then used a coat of EEE ultra shine to smooth it out. You can just about see yourself in the finish now.

Happy Turning!

I see our font changes that we try to make do not hold past the first sentence unless manually changed when finished typing. :(
