May 14, 201214 yr Hi all This time, I am looking for a piece of wood that is about 3.5x3.5 to 4x4" thick x10" or so, long I am wanting to turn a wood carvers mallet with this wood so it should be a hard wood like ironwood or close to it. For those of you that know what mallet I am seeking to make, if you know of other woods that would work too, just post here please. Oak may even work but i'm not sure Again minimum dimensions are 3.5" thick x 10" long it can be slightly longer and it can be slightly thicker I have been browsing eBay but haven't found the right dimensions yet Thanks everyone Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.nethttp://www.nichollswoodworks.comThis website is new so it doesn't have much to it yet but you are welcome to take a look
May 14, 201214 yr CharlesI have some Maple, but I would have to do a glue-up to get something that thick. Would that work? Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!
May 14, 201214 yr I am at work now, Will try to glue some up tonite. Charles Nicholls said: I'm not sure but it just might, and if I had large enough clamps I would be able to do a glue up too but my clamps that I have are too small. You can try it out if you want I'll even share the postage or pay it completely it doesn't matter either way I have ordered some 12" clamps though that should be in any day now. May 14, 201214 yr  4"x6"s The one across the top of those leg "blanks' is about 40" long, and I have two of them.  or did, one will get made up into a leg vise for the new work bench.   I also have some cut-offs, not sure how long.     A few nails, here and there, old barn beams... 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
May 14, 201214 yr  I'll see want I can scrounge up tonight.  Going out there to build a leg vise anyway..... Might even throw in a real mallet to boot, all you'd have to do is chuck it up, sand it smooth, and apply a finish.    i've had one for a few years, never used it...
