May 15, 201214 yr  Was out at the Pole barn Woodshop tonight.  Got a few things done.    Worked on a few handplanes, but got tired of chasing the board around.   You see, I was planing a plank to use as a leg vise.   Circ. saw did it's thing, then the splitting maul/sledge did theirs.   Place the slab onto the bench, and proceded to plane it done.  First up, the #33 scrub plane:Wicked little beast.  For those new to "scrubbing", this IS the direction the place goes in, across the grain.  Those big chips came from that little plane.   After getting close to flat, time for the jacks to work on the diagonal, and get rid of those scoop marks.Followed by a smooth plane, just to remove the diagonal marksI was making some see-through curlies.well, could be a better picture, that yellow is the sunlight shining through.   After the plank had been flattened up, squared off, and two corners clipped, the mitersaw also beveled the top edge.  I also drilled a 1" hole through both the plank and a leg.   Modified a pipe clamp, and added a hand to it.  The results?? Well, how about a picture of this thing in action, holding a chunk of wood for my planes to work on????Still working on the bottom joint, and will need to buy ( BUY???) a couple need pipe clamps.  Why a couple of them?    I not done making vises, that's why.... next time, maybe I'll have this "Wagon' hitched up...... stay tuned....... May 19, 201214 yr Author  To make a Wagon vise here, I'll need a few things.    A "Floor Flange" with 1/2' threads.   I'll screw that to the moving "Wagon" part.   A short !/2" Nipple ( keep it clean, guys) at about 4-6' long. It will attach to the floor flange and the screw part of the pipe clamp.  A couple wood screws to fix the screw part of the pipe clamp in place.    The threaded part will give me plenty of travel.    Now, I had better start thinking about some "doggies".   Old time dogs had a metal "jaw' on their tops, to keep things from sliding around.    My little "plan' would be more of those "pipe Nipples".    Drill a shallow hole, just big enough for a 1/2", or even a 3/4" nipple to sit in. Nipple can be one of those "all thread" looking affairs, about an inch or so long.   Drop one into the Wagon's locations (2 are planned) and one in some "Dog Town" holes, about 4-6" on centers.   Seems to be about the right kind of plan, for me, CHEAP! May 19, 201214 yr Steve, how heavy do you think this is by now?John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
May 19, 201214 yr Author  Maybe a couple hundred pounds.    My 19 yr old son can still lift ONE end.    I MIGHT add to the bottom, just a bit of "ballast". I want something that won't "walk across the floor' when i'm using it. If it weren't for those pipe fittings, I'd still be under budget.   Budget?   yep, ZERO DOLLARS.. May 22, 201214 yr Author  I think I have a $0.00 idea for that wagon "hitch".  I have a short length of pipe, with one end already threaded.    I can mount the wagon on the end of this pipe.   Just a bolt should do, to hold that end still.    Since the screw part is on the other end, and the pipe won't turn when the vise is operated, should be alright. I have some hardwood scraps as well.   I can make a slide for the wagon to move back and forth on, and the wagon itself.  WHEN I can get back out there to work on it.   The side with the leg vise:  Also needs a "high-tech" way to hold items in place. Leather lined jaws?  Not a problem, I have an old tool pouch.    Just line the jaws with a slice or two.   Holdfasts???    For now, just a short length of pipe, stuck through a hole, so that a board being edge planed will sit still. Leg vise to hold it, and the pipe as a "rest" for the board to sit on.  Might at a later date find some "real" holdfasts, but that's later. 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
May 23, 201214 yr I'd use some wood 1x1's or 2x2's planed to round dowels for bench dogs instead of pipe. And wrap them in leather from that old belt.
